Case study

I contracted HSV-2 in 1999 (In Central Africa). I had outbreaks on average every 2 months. It ended in my marriage breakup. At the time, ill informed, i couldnt risk passing onto my wife. I began taking acyclovir regularly (cream) and the episodes were coming every 3 months or so. I moved about a lot and used protection however i did infect several other women over the years. About 5 years ago i became addicted to methamphetamine. It was an intermittent habit as my work kept me traveling and involved urinalysis so i was doing it one month and abstaining the next. I was not taking acyclovir at this stage and also went celibate for the latter 3 years. I found that within a day or two of stopping the crystal meth, the lesions would appear very violently and last 2 weeks. This cycle went on and on the 3rd year i was on the methamphet for 3 month stretches and never got lesions. Well, i had to emigrate to escape the meth problem and now i am settled elsewhere, have been off drugs, in the gym and eating well. The Herpes has attacked me relentlessly. Only a week ago, the last lesions passed and today a new attack on the genital area. Its a relentless punnishment and i i think i probably infected my new partner. I am on the second day of lesions and just started the creme and 400mg acyclovir tabs. - Will the lesions heal quicker even though i started now? 2 - Why am i the anti-statistic in that after 12 years the frequency and fierceness is increasing? (I can verify emphatically that when on meth amphetamine, the virus is subdued or sheds silently) I am not HIV +, have very recently undergone a full and extensive medical which gave me clean bill of health. I am 41 male.

acyclovir is 400mg 2x/day for suppressive therapy.

when you have ob's, it's either 400mg 3x/day for 5 days or 800mg 3x/day for 2 days.

the herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com is a terrific free online resource for more info :)

acyclovir ointment does nothing for genital herpes recurrences. there is no reason to be using it.

you need to go on daily suppressive therapy and see if you are still having recurrences frequently. if you are, then it's time to go to the clinic for a further work up.
