Concerned on whether I have HSV and test results.

Feb. 2nd day (2/15) spent day on beach wore new bathing suit, ocean/sun/a lot of walking. Evening took shower, felt stinging on penis. Noticed small paper cuts/sores (erosions) on shaft, below the glan, ie: on shaft, am uncircumcised. Sores healed, slight scabbing where skin is thicker, no other scabs seen as you approach glan. 6 days later, gone No other symptoms.

Note: Just recovered from a flu (1/26 to 2/3). After flu, few days later had slight soreness on right cervical neck, went away few days later. Was also on antibodies (Ciprofloxacin) for diarrahea that would not go away (1/13 to 2/11). DR said there was nasty flu/gastro going around. Took antibodies on 2/11 to 2/17. Diarrhea gone, 2/12.

On 2nd event (7/1) on beach, wore new bathing suit (bathing suit from same company as the one above, bought same time/location, style/lining same). 2nd day spent in the sun/ocean/a lot of walking. Later that evening in pool, felt tingle/itch. Noticed little erosion like sores/paper cuts on my shaft. Went into shower, felt a slight sting. Sores were similar to what I saw in Feb and in same area. Sores/cuts healed the same way as 1st event, 6 days later gone. No other symptoms.

Went to DR on 7/13, said it sounded like gen herpes. Sent me fo blood test (am in Canada), test said: serology HSV 1 & 2. Paid 140$. He offered me suppressive 500mg VALTREX, I am sexually active and monogamous with my partner (10 yrs) and partner never had any symptoms all his life. Took medication and on the 3rd  day went for blood tests. Test taken 7/16. On 720 stopped taking the meds and wait for results. Results came back 7/30: negative for both HSV1 and HSV2. Lab said for HSV testing they use Elisa and Immunoblot.

Confused on occurences, results, bathing suit issue, STD?  Being on suppressive scew results? Should have been able to develop antibodies since my first occurence in February? What do you think of all this, is it herpes, and what should be my next steps?

Thks Terri

A final antibody test would be good about 4 months after any possible exposure to the virus.

Terri,

thank you for the reply. I want to let you know that you are all providing amazing support in these forums and thanks to all of you.

One more follow-up question, I will revisit my Dr to discuss the results and I will try to put this behind me, but I will always wonder if it was a false negative. What are the chances of that?

Assuming that I want to be 100% sure do you recommend me to re-test and when, and what tests should I do? Note: that I am in Canada.

Thank You again...and this is my last question on this post,

Thanks

well it said herpes is negative right?....so thats not the case.. if you had blood work they should have told you if you had anything..... how about sea lice??....very common in areas that the bathing suit sits on ....

I would believe the negative herpes test results.  The suppressive therapy started in July should not have impacted an antibody development that was going on.  You were on antibiotics would could certainly have caused a fungal infection under the foreskin, or some irritation from the ocean is also a possibility.  But I would believe the herpes blood test results in your case.  I hope you can accept them and put herpes worries behind you now.
