Confused about diagnosis

My gyno told me I have HSV-2- I was surprised at this diagnosis.  I told my boyfriend and he immediately got tested and came back negative, and we've been having unprotected sex for about a year - so I I asked my gp to test me and she says I'm negative.
I don't have the details from the test my gyno took, but the details from the gp's test are as follows:
My HSV-2 IGG antibodies are .9 and my HSV-2 IGM antibodies are <.8.
My HSV-1 IGG antibodies are 6 and the HSV-1 IGM antibodies are <.8.
So do I have HSV-2 or don't I?
My gyno gave me a prescription for valtrex - My gp says that if my immune system is strong (ie, I'm not feeling ill or rundown,) it is unlikely that I could pass it to my boyfriend during unprotected sex and that I shouldn't need to go on Valtrex.  What should I do?

1.3 is a low positive and needed additional testing.  http://www.medhelp.org/posts/STDs/Confusing-Igg-Test-Results/show/771141  is a prior post by HHH that goes into more details about low positives for more reading.

Just to be sure - you had no symptoms at all, this was just a general screening your gyn recommended?

Just called my gyno and my levels for that test were 1.3 - now she says I'm negative - how annoying!  for the last month I thought I had genital herpes and now she says I don't...  luckily I didn't trust those results...

Give the clinic a call at your gyn's office and ask them to read your herpes test results to you to post here.  I can best help you once I see those I think.

At this point I wouldn't bother with any precautions.

Thanks Grace

During my annual gyno exam, I was tested for HSV-2 and she said I was positive, which I was surprised by, especially since my partner was negative, so I asked my gp to retest me during that annual exam and she said I am negative for HSV-2.  I haven't ever had any genital symptoms.

As far as HSV-1 - I don't get cold sores on my lips, but I do get what I call pimples on my tongue or on the inside of my lower lip.

I'm concerned about the HSV-2 diagonosis and want to know what to do - get the prescription for valtrex (which I would prefer not to do)?  use condoms (which we also prefer not to do.)

well no wonder you are confused - they are testing you and saying one thing and doing another between the 2 of them!!!

first off - the igm is a poor test for herpes but regardless yours are negative anyways.

Your hsv1 igg is +. since you aren't describing any genital symptoms, can you recall a history of cold sores at all? Even if you can't, most folks who have hsv1 orally, aren't getting obvious cold sores to know it. odds are your hsv1 is oral like most folks.

your hsv2 igg is negative.

what prompted the testing for you?
