HSV 1 Transmission

I recently found out that I had been "exposed" to HSV 1 (whatever that actually means). I had never had a cold sore, until recently following a serious flu infection. I made sure not to kiss my partner during this time and I washed my hands with soap and water frequently.( excessively may be the better word). My questions is, if i do not have an ACTIVE sore on my mouth can I still pass it on to my partner through oral sexual contact (i.e to his penis)? Also, if I successful transmitted the infection to his genitals could I then receive it through sexual contact? He was tested at the same time as I was and he came back negative for HSV 1 & 2.  (Also, I tested negative for HSV 2, and have only had one cold sore to date). Thanks!

The reason I ask for the results is because sometimes a test which looks for IgM is not type specific and some times it is said that the person has herpes when in fact they may not.  Hence why I said we want to ensure proper testing was done.  Yes majority of the adult population has HSV-1 orally which is typically gotten as a child.

I gave a urine and blood sample to the lab. All i was told was that I had antibodies for the HSV 1 strand and that I had been "exposed" but not to worry about it. Seems a little contradictory if you ask me. However, I guess it could be worse. I hear most of the population has this ailment. Im not sure what you mean by Igm testing?

Talk to your doctor and see if you can get the results with the test name to make sure you have been tested properly and it wasn't the pesky igm testing.

No I don't actually she just asked me if I had ever had a cold sore and at the time I never had so I said no, and she told me  not to worry about it. That's pretty much the extent of the discussion. Thanks for answering!

if you tested + for hsv1 on a blood test then you have it. do you recall the actual numeric results you received for it?

In your age group, 1 out of every 3 people has hsv1 orally. Most of those aren't going to get obvious cold sores to know it. It's very common.  http://www.ashastd.org/herpes/herpes_learn_oralherpes.cfm   has terrific info for you and your partner to read through so that you can decide together if you protected oral sex is a good idea or not.
