Could this be herpes

During rough unprotected sex With my ex girlfriend I started to feel discomfort in my penis. After we had finished The discomfort had subsided so I cleaned my self and went to bed. 4hrs later when I got up I notice that the top of my foreskin was very red and also the right side of my penis glands were very swollen. There was no pain or discomfort at this point. I had recently been giving a cream for balantits as I had been taking a lot of antibiotics. So i decided to use this cream to see if it would help. The next morning I noticed a dramatic improvement In the swollen glands. The swelling had decreased by about half but i also noticed some moisture in the area of swelling. I used a tissue to clean away the moisture and re. Applied the cream. The following morning the swelling had completely gone. There has been no pain or soars in that area except for the swelling.

I'm not sure if this is just a case of sensitive skin and if I masturbate my glands do get slightly swollen but not as much as after the sex episode. Also for the past year under my foreskin there always appear to be a small rash. This appeared after I was also on another course of antibiotics last year.

Do you think this could be herpes?
Can herpes appear straight after sex?

I really don 't think this sounds like herpes.  And usually herpes takes a while to show up, at least a couple of days.  This sounds more fungal (which is what balanitis is). antibiotics can very easily cause fungus normally present on the skin to overgrow and cause problems that look very much like the one that you are describing.  The fact that the medicine made it better is a good sign also.  However, if it persists, gets worse, starts to form sores, be certain to check back in with your provider for an examination and testing, just to be certain.  But from what you've told me so far, I think you are good with treating for this fungal infection.

Have you and/or your partner ever been tested for herpes?

That's probably a very good idea, but be careful about long term use of steroids on the head of the penis under the foreskin, I'm sure he will be careful about that with prescribing.  If you get cold sores, then you have HSV 1 orally.

Hi Terri,

First off thank you very much for your reply.

No neither myself or my partner have been tested for herpes. I know that I do get cold sores on my face.

I spoke with my gp on the phone as he was the one who gave me the balantits cream and he said pretty much the same as you. So I have made an appointment with him to have a check up as since taking the antibiotics my foreskin has been easily irritated and red for about 6weeks now. He said he thinks he will prescribe a antifungal cream with a mild steroid in it.

Thanks for your time,
