what are my chances??

I had sex with a guy one time who is HSV-2 positive; he was diagnosed earlier this year.  He does take Valtrex when he has outbreaks.  We had unprotected sex once and he came inside me.  What are my chances that I have genitial herpes?  I have had a lot of vaginal irritation with bacterial vaginitis and UTI plus hemorhoids (which has always been a problem for me).  This happened about a month ago and I'm currently waiting for my blood tests to come back.  I do not have any sores just irritation.  No other signs.

Thank you for all the responses.  I appreciate the feedback.  Needless t say, I will probably remain worried since I am more than certain the hemorhoids are causing the burning in my rectal area and the stress and medication most likely is causing the irritation in the vaginal area.  I did get my results back from my blood work yesterday (which I know is not accurate because it has only been a month) and it was negative at .90.  I will wait until January and retest then and hopefully not stayed consumed or worried with this.  I'm glad people who are going through the worry of not knowing and those that need the support of dealing with this infection have a blog/board like this to turn to so they can discuss their questions, feelings, etc.  And for those you provide immediate responses; you are true, kind human beings for giving this support and your personal advice to all of us who have questions or worry.

you just have to wait and repeat the test 3 months post encounter. no need to wait 6 months.

the risk of contracting hsv2 from a one time encounter when he didn't have symptoms is very low.

at this point you've thrown quite a bit of things at your genital area. It's likely to be very irritated in general from all of that.  You haven't had obvious symptoms by now which is one more indicator that you probably didn't contract hsv2 from this partner.

Thank you, lunaperro!  I appreciate the responses.  I've always been a very worrisome person and will take your advise to try to stop.  You said to get another test after six months; is that just a extra step?  How accurate is the test after 3 months?

We've all been there and we've all undergone the stress of not knowing, which can in and of itself reduce the body's immune system and lead to health problems.

If after a month you've had no lesions or painful blisters then you're very likely in the clear. (Typical primary outbreak is within 2 weeks). It's far more likely that the medications and creams you're taking and the stress you've put yourself under is causing some irritations and complications. Find a way to reduce the stress and take your mind off it. Get another blood test after three months and again after six.

Thank you for responding.  It was one month ago today actually.  I had blood work done right away which of course came back negative because all that would have done was show a previous infeciton.  I'm unsure of the blood test, but I do know it way type specific because they read me the results for both HSV1 and HSV2.  I'm still waiting on my second round of test that I had done last Thursday which also was a type specific test.  I greatly appreciate the reassurance and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.  I know many people live with it and it is not deadly, but I don't know if I can.  Thank you again.

Your risk is incredibly low, especially since he was on suppressive therapy.  The risk for a woman to contract HSV II from a male over the course of the entire year, without condoms or suppressive therapy is 8-10%.  Dr. HHH & Hook estimates the risk from a one-time exposure to be 1 in 1000.  Suppressive therapy further decreases that.

When did you have sex with him?  If you need the peace of mine, have an IgG (not IgM) blood test 3 months after exposure.  Just remember your risk was extremely low.

I should also add...that I have been paranoid about this ever since that night.  I have been to the doctor numerous times; I have had 2 internal exams, a pelvic ultrasound, been on Ceclor for the UTI, then Metrozodile (not sure of spelling) for BV, then powerful dose of Zithromax (one time) just incase of the possibility of any other std's, then another antiobotic for the UTI again because it didn't fully clear, also steriod cream to put down here and cream for my hemorhoids.  I don't know if so many medications is causing me irritation or if I have it.  I'm completely freaking out...I have kids and I won't even let them touch the towels I dry my body with.
