Do I have whitlow?
i formed a rash type thing on my middle finger on the middle joint on my palm side, when I say it's a rash my finger just swelled up very badly and it was red. I contacted a PA and he said it was some bacteria or something and prescribed bacterium to take for a week. I didn't notice any big changes from taking it but after about a week it wasn't swollen at all and I went back to the doctor but this time the PA brought in a doctor and they said it was herpetic whitlow. Now I'm confused because I cannot find any pictures that look like what I have, there are no white ***** lumps there is just a big single swollen red finger. They never prescribed anything else and said it would go away in a little bit. I do work at a market and my hands get dry and cracked all the time I figured I got something from touching people's hands when I gave them money. I did have a girlfriend for 7 months but I'm pretty sure she doesn't have herpes of any kind.. So about a week later (today) my finger is swollen again and red should I wait to see what happens or get a culture test? Or what?
It is completely absurd that a doctor would diagnose whitlow without a swab.
The chances of an infection are so small that it is most likely something else. Obtain a swab if you can, it is the only feasible way of diagnosing whitlow.
