Do my HSV2 results look like a false positive?

Hi,

I really need some help in clearing things out for me, in August 2017 i carried out a complete STD test and all turned out negaive, except for HSV 2 IgM results showing 1.2, my IgG results were negative (Methodology used was ELISA).

A month later, i carried out the test again, the IgM came out as 1.38, and my IgG was still negative. This is where my doctor prescribed antiviral medication to be taken 5 times a day for a period of 2 weeks.

I have never had any symptoms of HSV 2, and from August 2017 onwards i have avoided having any sexual intercourse with anyone. Even though i have always had protected sex before that, never unprotected.

Upon finishing my Antiviral medication, i carried out a third test in October 2017, and all my result came out negative, my HSV 2 IgM was 0.79, and the IgG was 0.128.

Although i have avoided sexual intercourse ever since, I decided to carry out one more test this month just to make sure all was clear, and the results were for HSV2 were:
IgM was 1.76
IgG was 0.143

Can someone please help me and tell me

I am on medication again, this time Famvir 250mg 3 times a day for 10 days, but i am depressed and confused.
is there a possibility it was a false positive result? Does the medication I’m taking have a side effect if it was a false positive?
Does the IgM result matter at all? Given that i have not had any sexual interourse since my completely negative result in October 2017?

Thank you for your help.

Igm bloodtests should not be used for hsv. They are full of false positives. No std expert recommends the igm. Even the CDC is against igm for hsv. The only test here that counts is the igg and you are clearly negative. Unfortunately your Dr's lack of hsv knowledge and testing lead you to be stressed over nothing. I get atleast a few of these every week or so.

Thanks for sharing your feedback, I really appreciate it, I’m currently on medication, does it mean i should stop it? Can it cause any negative effects if i finished the course?

I was planning on doing a Western Blot, I understand that if the IgG is negative, so will the WB result be negative.

Does the fact that the IgG results have not changed from the negative state over the past 4-5 months mean that I’m negative?

Thank you very much for your help.
I would stop the medication if it were me. Antiviral meds generally cause no negative issues so if you want to finish feel free.
I wouldn't recommend the western blot. The fact your igg hasn't changed in 4-5 months is all the evidence you need. Again, igm tests are not to be used or trusted at all. Many labs are removing it from their herpes testing menu. I can't stress this enough... your negative, move on without concern.
Thank you very much for your help! God bless you!
You're very welcome.
