HSV 2 Symtoms

On 3-27-14 I had protected vaginal sex  - less then 5 minutes

Background:

Myself (male)   I am HSV 1 Positive from childhood
Female Partner (age 20)   Just received blood results on female partner and she is HSV 1 positive  and HSV 2 positive- Herpes  Select  Test by Quest -  Her  results  >5 on HSV 2-   She was unaware of having the disease and no obvious signs.

Issue- On day 4 post exposure through day 10- I  have had a series of symptoms that I can not interpret- I have read numerous posts and articles on prodromal  herpes symptoms and actual signs and symptoms of herpes outbreaks so I am unclear as to the reality of my symptoms.

My symptoms-1) Itching on- Both testicle. 2) Mild discomfort in and around area of  leg  crease  that meets the scrotum (Bilateral) pain is like mild pressure (like a toot ache)  No signs of outbreaks.

Question: Are theses symptoms describe sound like herpes prodromal symptoms that has aborted and thus no signs or actual just mild symptoms since I am HSV 1 positive.  I am hoping that since members have spoken to many individuals that someone can offer more insight then what the traditional book responses are...

Thank you.

Hi, the thing about prodrome is are most associated with someone who already has herpes and is used as a tool to predict upcoming outbreaks and can be quite effective in this. You mention you tested positive for hsv1 so i assume you also tested for hsv2 and were negative. The question is now  about these symptoms and are they related to contracting a recent infection of hsv2.
Since prodrome is associated with old infections and you tested negative back then, the assumption would be no they are not related. But as fleetwood says only testing would confirm.

Also the area of testicles and sides of legs are not areas of a new outbreak as would be at point of contact which would be any area that was exposed to her genital hsv like your pubic mound area.
Also prodome is most a tingling as is a nerve issue not from what your describing.

I used the HerpeSelect ELISA at 9, 12, 16, and 24 weeks. What is the flaw with this test?

Thank you for your support. Yes, I was tested negative HSV 2 and all other stds a few months ago.   (hsv 1 the only positive) The pressure I was referring to is in the inguinal hernia area... left groin area is inflamed and I can feel a lump particularly when I cough...

I have not heard or read about HerpeSelect's Elisa's HSV test being inaccurate or having issues with inaccuracy. Can you provide a link to such a claim. You could cause alarm for those that have tested negative with that test over 16 weeks and cause them to question their results.

The Immunoblot is a HerpeSelect test as well. What is the difference in the two? Please provide feedback on this.

For the thread starter, a 16 week IGG test would confirm your status regarding HSV2. You must wait it out.

Hello - thanks for contacting me. I'll try to give you my perspective:

If the initial discomfort you felt on your leg crease was not itching or burning, but as you said, a pressure, you could conceivably be experiencing nerve pain - often a symptom of the activating virus. However, this would mean you already had the virus dormant in the nerve bundle in order for it to be affecting a nerve in another area than the original site of infection. This then would likely not be your primary genital infection, if it is herpes at all. However, many things can cause the discomfort you describe.

Were you ever tested for HSV-2?

The condom only provides about 30% protection against contracting the virus. This is why people contract HSV even while wearing the condom.

It is not necessary to grind the virus into a nerve. All that is necessary is a mucous membrane or a portal to come into contact with a shedding place on the infected partner. That said, the testicles are covered with skin, not mucous membrane. It is possible during intercourse to create small portals in the genitals, though I'm not sure how likely this would be on the testicles.

I'm not personally fond of statistics. At any moment, we could be manifesting the wrong side of the statistics.

According to Terri Warren, the amount of protection that prior HSV-1 antibodies provide against contracting HSV-2 is not sure from person to person. There was an official figure of 40% at one time, but some studies contradict this.

Yes, there is some anecdotal evidence that having HSV-1 antibodies will reduce the severity of symptoms from a new HSV-2 infection, but there is no hard research that measures this reduction.

Lymph nodes are only rarely affected by the virus. I would not assume that your lymph node issue is a symptom of herpes. It is more likely to be unrelated.

Your courses of action? I recommend an IgG type-specific blood test right now, but if possible, ask for something other than the HerpeSelect ELISA, which has recently been found by investigative studies to have problems with accuracy. Some patients have had success with Captia and immunoblot IgG tests.

If you ever experience a lesion, go and have it swabbed for a PCR DNA test within 48 hours, to avoid risking a false negative.

In about 16 weeks past potential exposure, get another reliable test. If the first one was negative for HSV-2 and the second positive, this is your first infection of HSV-2.

But not on the testicles as primary outbreaks are at point of contact and if you think you got it on your testcles, the rubbing it would take to force the virus into a nerve would be too painful so you can rule that out. The areas your taking about did not make contact with her so you can rule it out. Mild discomfort is not a herpes primary outbreak symptom and with a primary outbreak the symptoms are body aches and fever not tingling and mild discomfort.

Thanks for the reassurances, and your patience...  but the symptoms of recent itching and today pain/discomfort and swollen lymph node area is on day 13? I do understand the odds.   Like other high anxiety people , I have rad every study available.. including a new 2013 study regarding condom use... but, the reality is that some people do acquire it with one act and condoms..

If she did not have any vaginal sores, and you using a condom and also you having hsv1 and no symptoms at 3 to 13 days, puts the risk you contract it from a one time affair so slim its not anything to worry at all about.  Please put this behind you. People with hsv2 genital having unproteced sex with no sores present at the time,  go for years without contracting it and many dont ever contract it.You can test 3 months post exposure if you want, but if you think you contracted it this time the odds are miniscule to a point of almost zero risk.

Visually it appears larger than the right side and a  mildly discomfort, no discomfort or pain with pressure on the area.  The act was fully protected and it was a- described on the internet  kamasutra - eagle position. (close to this type of position) I do not think there was any grinding.. simply pushing "banging" motion. I think the actual physical contacrt would be 3-5 minutes.

Ok lets talk turkey. You say its slightly enlarged how do you know this. Compared to what? Tell us more about the act, it was protected. Was it just in and out or was there alot of genital mound area rubbing and grinding. You really have to under stand that with a long time hsv1 infection, the chances your contracted hsv2 is really very low. These strong antibodies do protect us from acquiring another hsv and if not wed have herpes all over the place from head to toe and we do not.

Thank you for your comments... As anxiety builds, today I noticed that where my left groin lymph node is located it appears to be slightly enlarged... this does not sound like good news...????

The issue is that often the experience of people infected with HSV2 once they have HSV1 is no symptoms at all. There is no way of knowing whether the symptoms you describe are independent of herpes or a result of them (which I feel most unlikely).

Personal experience was that the first I knew of HSV2 I had irritating small patches of sores on my shaft. I have had HSV1 since my youth.

You will not know until take a blood test whether transmission has taken place. Note that it is very unlikely per single protected episode.

The symptoms on their own are more likely to be something else. With HSV1 antibodies, transmission to you is possible with no discernible symptoms. You have had a HSV2 positive partner and if it is important to find out at this time, then you need to undertake blood testing.
