HSV-1, a zit, or other?

af3
Hi MedHelp,

About a week ago, I had a pimple appear on the edge of my right lip. It had a white tip and was a little painful if you pushed on it. I messed with it a little bit, and the next day it had swollen up and was warm, like an infection. Since then, I have been using Abreva and Differin on it. The Differin makes the largest difference – it reduces the size significantly.

When it first showed up, it looked a lot like this picture: http://www.adamjbc.f2s.com/dlc/test/Photo-0171.jpg. It no longer has a white tip, and there are two small bumps (neither red nor painful) below it. I am trying to determine if its an HSV-1 outbreak, which I've never been tested for, or a simple ingrown hair, zit, or other irritation from aggressive shaving or improper face washing in that area.

Thanks!

Doesn't look like a Herpes lesion to me more like a zit of some description, leave it alone thats my advice stop irritating it further.
Herpes lesions are generally a cluster of fluid filled blisters ( clear or yellowish) that can be itchy, hot and tingly then after a few days the blisters break and the fluid is released and it crusts over and heals the whole process can take about a week sometimes longer.

The key clue would be if this painful bump reappears periodically at the same exact location. If it does, odd are it's a cold sore.
