hsv1 transmission

Hi again. I have hsv 1 orally. I am very careful to protect my partner who has no known hsv infections. Because my obs are frequent (one or two a month), I'm always cautions about contact. I check for them daily. Yesterday, I engaged in deep heavy kissing and preformed oral sex. At the time, I had no prodrome symptoms.

About twelve hours or so later, to my horror, I began developing a cold sore (symptoms must have began during the night while I slept). I know transmission is greatest durning an overt ob, but what about just prior to any symptoms? I'm terribly worried for my partner. He's 46, and I know that the likelihood of him already carrying the antibodies is almost better than 50/50, but for the sake of argument, lets say that he's negative. Was this a high risk event for him?

I know there are no real hard statistics, but in your opinion, how much more contagious am I in the hours preceding a ob vs durning prodrome symptoms?

I just hate having this condition. It seems so unpredictable and I worry so much about passing it on! I wonder if I should give up on kissing and oral sex altogether!!

Yes, I agree with that opinion, but I sure wouldn't bet the farm on it!  He needs testing

There is a chance you could have infected him during this time, yes, even if you have no symptoms at all, you could infect him.  However, I think you two definitely need to know his HSV 1 status!  Is there a reason you haven't tested him, he could also have HSV 2 and not know it and you could acquire that.  And do you know that you don't have HSV 2?

Also are you cold sores on the outside of you mouth or inside?

Hi Terri. I have been tested and I am negative for HSV2 and positive for HSV1. My sores are always on the outside of my mouth. Does that matter?

There is no real reason why he hasn't been tested. I know he was tested for 'everything' in past, but not sure what the specific tests were.

Btw, I've been reading that most encounters to herpes don't lead to infection even with active lesions. Do you share is opinion?
