HSV Type 2

I am a 63 yr old female that has not been sexually active for at least 5 years.
Last year I was feeling terrible  and had developed a rash on my "bum" that would go away and then next month come back. Each time I had the "rash" I felt terrible. Fatigue mostly.
I went to a dermatologist and had a biopsy and I was diagnosed as having Herpes Simplex 2. I was shocked and horrified. How can one get herpes and not have sex?
She gave me a cream to apply to the area.
I still kept getting the outbreaks so I went to a Infectious disease doctor and he prescribed Famvir 500mg 2 x a day while I had a break out and 500 mg every day for the rest of my life!
It has helped some but I still get some break outs.
Does this virus stay with you forever? I am so confused.

Its just a confirmation. Also with shingles there is most always just one outbreak in a life time. You might want to confirm what test was done with the biopsy as biopsys dont distinguish the type but you tested positive for hsv2.

Thank you for your information. Why suggest a blood test? Could it be something else?

What is a PCR test? What will a HSV blood test tell me that I don't already know?

Get a HSV blood test immediately. A biopsy is not at all accurate and cannot truly distinguish between herpes simplex 1, 2 or even zoster (shingles), they all appear the same under microscope. A PCR test would be a different story.

Hi, people can have this without any breakouts for years and its not clear why all of a sudden breakouts happen. It is a virus with no cure at present day. The recommended dosage from Terri Warren for famir is 1000mg orally twice a day for one day for recurrent outbreaks and for suppression would be 250mg twice a day every day.

Usually the first outbreaks are the worst. You might want to have a blood test just to confirm.
