Is it possible to get your first herpes outbreak years after contracting it?

I am 33 and I was diagnosed with HSV today. It was my first outbreak and the culture is still pending but I have classic symptoms. I have been with the same guy for four and a half years. I'm confused, scared, angry and many other things. I'm not sure if it's possible he cheated on me, if I had it and it's been dormant for that long or longer, or vice versa and he had it.....advice??

Terri Warren's has a guide book on the subject. I highly recommend.
Yes hsv can lay dormant for years and can be so mild that people do not know they have it. Yours is a common tale.

Please describe your symptoms?

One more thing. I suggest doing a lot of your own research as many Dr's do not know much about herpes. I field a ton of questions from folks who have received bad advice or wrong info from their Dr's. I'm not saying this will be the case for you but it's always good to educate yourself.

Firstly, everyone's body and immune system is different. Strains of HSV also differ, some are stronger than others. Stress plays a role too.  So in short, yes, once in the body, the virus has been known to remain dormant for years in some cases mainly in those who have very strong immune systems. But what's typical for symptoms usually appear within a few days after exposure.

This is definitely a great question to bring up with your doctor! Ask them to explain your results to you. Some examples of other typical questions to ask the doc may be:
- What types of precautions should I take while waiting for the results of these tests?
- Should my current and past sexual partners also be tested? Why or why not?
- When will the results of these tests be available? Should I call for the results or will someone contact me?
- Can you recommend any resources for support and/or more information for people with herpes and their partners?
