HSV1 & HSV2 - can it reoccurences appear elsewhere?

My husband had his first genital outbreak a month and a half ago. He tested positive for HSV2. Two weeks later I had my outbreak, but tested negative for HSV1 and HSV2. However, 6 weeks later after the fact I tested positive for both? How could this be? Could there be a mistake - Im pretty sure I dont have HSV1, but HSV2 like my husband. How could I have both? Can my body just have developed antibiodies from the HSV2 and it appear as 1 in the bloodwork.
My first outbreak was genital - becuase I tested positive for both does this mean I can have an facial outbreak? Do the outbreaks normally reappear where you first get them? This is my biggest concern.
Also, can I still do bubble baths with my son when I dont have outbreaks - how does the shedding work with bubble baths? (i wear a bathing suit)
Can i share drinks with my son - or becuase I tested HSV 1 positive he could get it through shedding?

Hi Terri,

if I were to get retested is there a possibility that the type 1 might be lower? Or will it always stay the same or higher? since you and 2 other doctors are pretty certain it is quite impossible that I could have gotten type 1 at the same time as type 2 i was just curious if i retest could it in fact come back negative?

My husband got tested again and he is only TYPE 2 positive. He is the only other person I have been with since I got married. And prior to me testing positive for both I was negative for both.

Just let me know if there would be a chance it might say negative - thank you!

It sounds to be me like he had established HSV 2 infection when he had his first outbreak.  So instead of it being his first REAL outbreak, it was rather his first RECOGNIZED outbreak.  Do you see the distinction?

It really doesn't make much sense that you were infected for the first time with both HSV 1 and 2.  My guess is that it is possible that your positive HSV 1 value is really a kind of crossover reaction from the HSV 2 infection, but of course I can't be certain about that.  Knowing the index values would be helpful with this.

You won't transmit virus to your son via saliva, but if you do have oral infection, and get symptoms, you could transmit to your son via a kiss while symptoms are present.  There is still much to be learned here, and I think confirmation of your HSV 1 result would be advised.  Let me know how I can help, OK?

Did your husband test positive for HSV 2 from a swab test of the lesion or an antibody test?  Did you test negative from a lesion swab or the antibody test?  Was the test an IgG or IgM.

If he tested positive by antibody test for HSV 2, and you initially tested negative for both HSV 1 and 2, this suggests that your first outbreak was indeed a true primary outbreak, that you had no herpes before you acquired it from him, if he is your only partner.  What were the numeric values associated with the positive results.  And was yours an IgG or IgM?  Can you get the results and post them here for me?  That way, I can help you a lot more.

It can still be crossover

Hi Terri - I know u said u wouldn't respond again, but i did retest. Let me know if I need to pay the $20 again for you to respond.

Numbers came back type 1 - 1.4, type 2: 2.96

Does this mean I can get an oral outbreak then? What are the symptoms in knowing that?
Also, I could just have gotten type 1 & 2 down there, meaning that the reoccurrence would be in the genital area as well, unless i give my husband oral sex correct?

Last but not least, can it still be a crossover?

Yes, a follow up test could be negative, or it could be positive at a low level again.
This will be my final post on this thread.

Most often, sores in the mouth are canker sores.  If you want to be certain about the distinction, only a swab test can tell you for certain

how can you tell the difference between a cold sore and a canker sore inside the mouth?

If you didn't give your husband oral sex around this time, then it is highly unlikely that the sore in your nose is a cold sore (and is likely neither HSV 1 nor HSV 2).  If you get another one, get it swab tested for herpes at first appearance.

Yes you can share drinks with your son.
Cold sores normally are tender, yes.

I dont think I did give oral sex when I was infected with HSV 2. So basically we can disregard HSV1, and the reocurrence of HSV2 orally is rare.
What I meant about the nose was that it couldn't have been HSV 1 but if it in deed was a cold sore it was most likely HSV 2.

So i can still share drinks with my son unless I see a cold sore present on my lips. Ok no sharing of lipstick, chapstick or drinks BUT ONLY WHEN COLD SORES ARE PRESENT CORRECT?

As far as a Cold sore I would know if i had it correct? it would hurt like crazy?

I"m not sure about the sore in your nose.  We didn't discuss this, I don't believe, but were you the giver of oral sex to your husband at the same time you became genitally infected?  If yes, then it is possible that you got HSV 2 both orally and genitally.  If that is the case, you may well have symptoms in the beginning (like your nose), but recurrences of oral HSV 2 are rare.  Since the nose sore is gone, there is no way it can be swabbed now to know for your.  And if you were not the giver of oral sex to him, then there is no worry there.

What you describe does sound like a canker sore, and if you've had them before, then you know what they are.

Cold sore virus can be transferred by direct contact with someone who is uninfected.  And I think lipstick and chapstick sharing should be avoided during a cold sore as well.

Hi Terri,

I have one last question and I will stop bothering you. What you told me has helped alot I am just still in doubt of two things:

1. So the pimple or whatever I had inside my nose for over a month (or when I noticed it) was something else entirely correct? Now its completely gone.

2. I have a canker sore now, but I'm wondering if it could be a herpes sore? Its under my middle teeth in the gum area. It only hurt yesterday for a bit when I noticed it, its a little red and you could see a small white part. My husband insists its a canker sore and that I am going crazy because if it would have been a herpes sore it would of hurt for a longer time not just a day. Also he says that before I used to have this and now that I know about HSV I think everything is HSV.

After your thoughts on this I wont post anymore.

After this I will also safely say I know Im HSV  2 positive for sure - i just want to make sure about the other part since I am having such a hard time dealing with this.

Lastly, if anyone has a cold sore in their lips, as long as they dont kiss someone else ON THEIR LIPS it cant be transferred correct?

Thank you!

No, I wouldn't.  The chances that you would get both at the same time are so tiny and your HSV 1 index value is so low, I think you can safely assume you only have HSV 2

would u retest?

Yes, your HSV 2 recurrences will be in the boxer shorts area.

So the recurrence of HSV2, will 95% be on the genital area as well since that was where my first outbreak was correct?

Great! So then it could be because I just got the HSV 2 that the HSV 1 numbers were high, like the crossover. Thank you soo much for all of your help.

I am going to retest in a couple of months just to be on the safe side. So above 1.1 its 100% positive.

Your HSV 1 test is not technically positive - it is equivocal, and my strong guess is that it is truly negative.  It has to be above 1.1 to be called positive.  I don't think you have HSV 1, but you could certainly retest at another time if you wish, but your circumstances don't suggest that.

And yes to bubble baths ;-)

Hi Terri,

Here are the numbers

HSV 1: IgG 1.01
HSV 2: IgG 2.93

Please let me know what those mean.

Thank you so much!

So, yes to bubble baths unless we have a sore present in the genitals.

However, if the numbers do show positive results for HSV1 I can only transmit it to my son if I were to get a cold sore on my lips correct, not through saliva? Also, they say cold sores normally reappear in the same exact site so chances are I would most likely get it inside my nose again correct?

Yes, it would be extremely unlikely to transmit HSV 1 to your son unless you had a cold sore.
Also, what are the chances that I could get an oral infection if I already got it on my genitals?

Unlikely, once the genital infection is well established, about 3-4 months.  But it is possible to acquire both at the same time, but I would expect symptoms at both locations at the same time.

Are bubble baths safe when no symptoms are present? (With my son in a bathing suit - he is only 1).

Absolutely - and don't worry about the swimsuit please~

Also, when you mean a KISS - a KISS ON THE CHEEK as well? I dont kiss my son on the lips only on the cheek and forehead.

Terri you have been super helpful. I am going to try and get those numbers for you.

I did get a very weird pimple inside my nose that has lasted for over a month now which is the reason why I continue to take Valtrex 2x per day for over a month and a half. I was sick and it came after that, but my husband says Im just freaking out thinking that everything is Herpes (which is kind of true). What you are saying about a crossover sounds right, considering my husband and I have never had cold sores, so I think it is a cross over as well. At least I'm hoping it is.

However, if the numbers do show positive results for HSV1 I can only transmit it to my son if I were to get a cold sore on my lips correct, not through saliva? Also, they say cold sores normally reappear in the same exact site so chances are I would most likely get it inside my nose again correct?

Also, what are the chances that I could get an oral infection if I already got it on my genitals?

Are bubble baths safe when no symptoms are present? (With my son in a bathing suit - he is only 1).

This has eased my mind alot. Thank you

He tested positive from both the swab and the lesion for HSV 2. I tested positive for both 1 and 2 6 weeks after my first outbreak. I will most def try and get those numbers for u.

However, is it true that outbreaks normally occur in the same place? If i am indeed positive for both what are the odds of it getting on my face? Also, I am on valtrex 2x per day for a month is that dangerous?

Can i transmit this to my son through the saliva? is that true?
