I have had oral herpes type 1 for 30 years and had a root canal and got a Herpes outbreak around the gum tissue where the root canal was done. That week the dentist said she had two of us get it. She gave me oral Zovirax tablets to take. It was way more painful than the root canal. So you can get it in the mouth along the nerve where it resides. I had never had that happen in all these years though. So it is unusual but it can happen. I don't think that is what you were referring to but I wanted to mention it.

Sometimes upon primary infection with HSV1, the mouth will have widespread sores inside.
In the absence of serious illness impacting the immune system, then recurrent outbreaks will usually involve just the lips or the nose where it meets the upper lip.
Otherwise it is far more likely that any sores inside the mouth are not herpes related.
