Herpes Across Multiple Parts of Body

A few years ago I was diagnosed (confirmed) with a herpetic whitlow on my finger.   My Dr. said recurrences would happen, if at all, in the exact same spot.   Unfortunately several months later I had an outbreak on my shoulder (again, confirmed).    He said he could only assume I had scratched myself there when I had the whitlow since this was not a connected nerve path.   Now, almost two years since the last outbreak, I have had another, but this time just above my left ankle on my shin.   My questions:

- How is this possible?   I though self infecting after the first outbreaks was rare and I haven't had one on in two years.
- Does this mean I can have outbreaks appear anywhere on my body?
- Is the nerve path down to the lower shin ,the same as the genital area?  In other words, should I expect someday that gential herpes will appear?
- Does this appearance across so many area's indicate it is more likely one type of herpes than another (1, 2 or zoster)?

s2 and s3 innervate the genital area and run down the back of the leg, you're right, the front of the shin is a different innervation.

I do not know if the Whitlow was 1 or 2.   I have been traveling and unable to have the one on my shin confirmed.  I have an appointmentr with my Dr. as soon as I get back in towm next week.

I looked up a dermatome chart and if I am reading it properly the front of the shin is L5 and wraps around the back of the leg to the lower back, not the genital area.  C6, does connect directly from the hand to the spot on my shoulder where the outbtreak occurred (Back just above my armpit)  so that makes sense.  Does it sound as if I am reading this chart correctly?

I am still puzzled as to how I would get an outbreak from a totally different nerve group all these years later.

Recurrences of herpes can happen anywhere in the nerve group that the virus infected.  Do you know if your whitlow was HSV 1 or HSV 2?  Depending upon the finger, the shoulder may well be  in the same dermatome, so an outbreak there would be consistent with the same nerve group.  The nerve path to the lower shin can be the same nerve dermatome as the genitals, yes.  You can look up a picture of the dermatome and your location to be certain.  Was the ankle one confirmed by swab test?  Have you had an antibody test for HSV 1 and 2?  If yes, what was the result?
