Positve PCR - Negitive Blood

I need some help.  I recently had an ulcer show up on the tip of my penis.  I went to the doctor and tests were run.  Sexual Background:  I have been in a commited relationship for 6 months.  Nether of us have cheated (to my knowledge)  we have unprotected sex.  My last sexual partner was protected sex over 7 months ago.

GF blood results were negitive for all HSV.  This was done via blood as she had no symptoms. Test was run last week.

my tests were run 5 days after first sign of symptoms

HSV 1 - IGG positive
HSV 1 - IGM negitive
HSV 2 - IGG negitive
HSV 2 - IGM negitive
Viral Culture - Neg
PCR - HSV2 positive

It is this PCR that throws me off.  If i had HSV2, and I didn't get it from current relationship then 7 months should have been more than enough time for IGG antibodies to show up - right?

Does this mean a false positive on PCR side?

Any thougths?

that's up to you.  I don't think these are herpes symptoms.

its been two day...no lesion,  There is a tiny, tiny bump on the tip but that could be anything.  Testicle are sore but not as bad - groin also sore but again not as bad.  Should I refrain from protected sex? if so, how long?

this could be many things going on. if it's herpes, you'll have an obvious lesion in a day or two.

Grace,

This am I felt a tingle again in the healed area of my penis. I also have been having sore testicles and pain in inner thighs.   A warming sensation is on both testicles and penis and testicles are red. Another outbreak?  So soon? Is this all in my head?

as I said previously, some folks will not develop detectable levels of the igg response that most tests look for for testing for hsv2.  really nothing else I can add at this point.

One other thought.  Could the pcr test really be for HSV1?  That would make a lot more sense.  Again, thinking a lab mixup or error?  1 seems to be more rare in that area but it would align with my numbers better.  Not to dwell on it but 6-7 months with no igg hsv2 sounds almost impossible.

makes no difference if you get obvious lesions or not as far as igg development and actual numeric results.

Ok.  Thanks.  So now that I may have had an "OB" should my IGG HSV2 increased?

this would be a well established infection for you since your partner is testing negative so taking valtrex would have no effect on future blood tests.

Ok.  Thanks for the insight.  I'm sure you get this one a lot but how does valtrax effect future blood tests?

the hsv1 and hsv2 tests are different.  testing accurately on one, doesn't mean you'd test accurately on the other :(

your other option is to stop all medications and wait for your next ob and be seen again for another pcr swab to confirm infection if you need the peace of mind.

Yes.  Protection and meds.

Again,  just assumed I would have developed the igg by now.  Pcr is accurate I was wondering about a mess up or lab contamination.  I would think that if I had hsv 1 antibodies I should have no problems growing the hsv 2 if I had the infection.

there is a small percentage of folks who will never test accurately on the igg blood tests we currently offer. you can try seeking out a herpes WB if you want - it looks at more of the igg response to herpes infection and often will detect hsv2 infections that other tests miss.  we rely on lesion cultures to diagnose the folks who don't test accurately on blood tests. pcr swabs are most accurate because they don't rely on growing out virus in the lab - they look for herpes dna.

have you and your partner discussed what precautions to take?

I understand your point about pcr but shouldn't I have developed the igg antibodies after my last possible infection date which was 7 months ago?

Partner results
Hsv 1 igg neg
Hsv 2 igg neg
Hsv 1/2 igm neg
No signs so no culture

really no reason to suspect a false positive pcr.

can your partner get a copy of their test results to post here too?
