Thank you Life360 and flappinfish for responding. Yes, he has scheduled a test for tomorrow and I will post the results here. In the meantime, I have asked him to join a support group and get real advise from people who are living with it. He is going to be stressed till this entire thing sinks in. And I believe he will be better once this first one goes away. I am catching up on all the resources online to help him here.
Thank you once again for your responses. I will follow up soon with more questions :)
Its not uncommon to have an outbreak after a physical trauma/injury. It is uncommon to have a dentist so called give it to you.
The virus can stay dormant for a very long time and never show symptoms. It may stay dormant for a lifetime. Most likely your friend has had HSV-1 for a long time and the dental procedure aggravated the nerve where the Herpes virus lives, causing the outbreak.
HSV-1 is very common. Stats are aprox 70-90% of the U.S. population are carriers. It could be that this might be his only outbreak ever and it could be that he might get it from time to time. Generally the first outbreak is the worse. There are many forums and advice pages on the net to help him. He will be fine, getting emotionally panicked will not help him or his immune system. It is always emotionally upsetting at first, but fades with time. Again, many, many people carry this virus...he doesnt need to feel alone.
Hi, well first of all he needs to be tested for confirmation. If he has a recent lesion within the last 48 hours he can have it swabed and a culture drawn and have the results in a few days.
I personally dont believe he got it from the dentist as they wear gloves and sanitize everything. For an adult to contract oral herpes there most often needs to be direct contact with an infected person like hard kissing.
Only young children are really at a risk for contacting herpes via saliva on a glass as their immune systems are not yet developed but adults they are..
Its estimated that 70% of the adult population would test positive for hsv1 and there a chance he already had it and the stress of the dentist visit caused and out break.
Be careful accusing anyone before the tests are in.
