Herpes, friction irritation or yeast infection?

I am a healthy 26 year old woman. I had protected sex with a guy a day and half ago and yesterday I started to feel a burning sensation just inside and around the outside of the vaginal opening. I took a look and it is red as it is definitely irritated and feels like a possible yeast infection but no discharge. Could this be the start of a herpes breakout or am I just being paranoid? What are the chances of catching it from a one time exposure with protection? I did not see anything out of the ordinary (breakout wise) but I hear a lot of about shedding?  Of course I asked him but he's not going to say yes I have herpes. Advice please :(

oh and with recurrences, obvious lesions typically occur within 24-48 hours of the appearance of prodromal symptoms ( itching, burning ).

could you have been infected with genital herpes previously and just never realized it? Yes you could have. have you ever had type specific herpes igg blood testing done to know your status?

usually just redness is irritation. as I said, be seen if you are concerned.

Thanks Grace, do you think this could be something I may have gotten a while ago and it is possibly flaring up? 3 months ago I had unprotected sex with someone and I got a yeast infection soon after and had night sweats and hot flashes. I was worried about HIV at that time but have already had 2 tests done and they are okay. My doctor believed the night sweats were just my anxiety. I'm curious if that was a time I contracted herpes without the actual break out of sores just irritation? Could it be possible I contracted it with that person but never produced sores? Today my irritation has subsided quite a bit but still have the burning under my right buttock and down the back of my right leg. I'm going crazy!!!!

Also how soon after the burning of the skin do sores appear, if they even do?

it's not likely that symptoms you were feeling less than 48 hours post encounter were due to a newly acquired herpes infection.

certainly follow up on this with your provider if symptoms continue or you are concerned.

Hi again,

Are you in America or UK? That's good news the doc doesn't think it's herpes. Just from what I have experienced & what alot of other newly diagnosed herpes sufferers have experienced your symptoms don't indicate that it is that. I guess all you can do is try the cream the doc recommended and keep an eye on it.

Thank you for your response. I have had a little of nausea but hoping it's just my nerves and anxiety about this. I do have a bit of a burning feeling under my right buttock but it's stemming from the irritated area between the vagina and anus. I do feel as though I have a bit of a warm/burning feeling on the back of my right leg but I have had this about 2 months ago and it was accompanied by a yeast infection. I just got back from the Dr and he said it is inflamed more than likely just a reaction from the condom. He did a pelvic exam and didn't see anything out the ordinary besides the redness. He proscribed me a cream and a steroid. He also said since these symptoms started soon after I had sex it is more than likely just irritation bc it would take a bit longer to show symptoms from infections.I'm still really worried though.

And yes to answer your question about is Herpes common? I never knew anything about it until I got it myself!  Goes to show how blind people can be! The statistics for Herpes is quite high considering no one really talks about it.

I'm in the UK where it's quite common but USA has even higher statistics.

Hi ya,

I had (unprotected) sex in January this year & was diagnosed with Genital Herpes HSV 2 within a week as I had sores and irritation and other symptoms of Herpes.  Yours doesn't sound like Herpes as you haven't had any sores?  Also there are normally other symptoms like flu like feeling, nerve like pains in your legs and itching.

I would go to the clinic though to check but yours sounds like a bacterial infection to me which I've had before as well.

Hope this helps! :-)
