Herpes on arm

I first got a rash on the left side of my back by my bra line and the doc thought it was a rash and gave me callymin lotion. A week later I got it on my left knee and soon after it hit the left side of my arm and sometimes my left wrist. The outbreak happens most often on my left arm. Why is it always on the left side of my body?

A doctor swabbed the areas and took blood saying that it is genital herpes. I'm curious how do you get diagnosed with genital herpes yet you've never had herpes in your genital region. I spoke to the doctor about this and have had several check ups in the genital area when ever I had outbreaks and nothing was found. All tests came back clean.
I'm confused how this can happen. One doctor mentioned that I could have been born with the virus if a parent had the virus and others say that I had to have the virus in my genital area in order to get it on my arm.

How can one be diagnosed with a vanarial virus when it was and has never been in the vinarial area?

I greatly appreciate your time and am excited to hear clarity on this subject.
