Herpes results

I did a full STD test at the first of May. Everything came back negative except my herpes results. I tested positive for both 1 & 2. They told me over the phone. They did not give me lab values or anything. All the nurse said was to call if I ever had an outbreak, and they would give me a prescription for valtrex. I've never had an outbreak. The last time I had sex (and it was unprotected) was at the end of December 2012. I started researching online about herpes when I came across the WB test. I called to get that information. They are sending me a kit, but my doctor will not write an order for the test. I have to find a doctor that will. I called my doctor's office to get a copy of my lab results. I was reading over them and found that my HSV 1 was IgG 3.15. I already knew I had that. I do get cold sores occasionally. And my HSV 2 was IgG 0.90. According to the scale, it was negative, so I don't understand why I tested positive for HSV 2. Could someone please help me to understand these results? I would appreciate it dearly!

No, I do not believe he has been tested. He has been with the same person for 13 years (recently divorced), so I don't know when he has been tested last.

I really wouldn't bother getting the WB done. you waited enough time for your testing and the 2nd negative hsv2 igg after the immunoblot confirms that you aren't infected.

was your partner you  had recently tested for herpes? protected sex isn't 100% protection against herpes, syphilis and hpv transmission.

Also, I was reading another post. My physician used labcorp. Does this make a difference? Thank you, by the way, for your responses. I have felt so scared and confused. You have been such a tremendous help!!!

I need help....I tested postive for 'oral herpies' with a 5.65....I dont know what the numbers mean....is this more serious than a normal result?  the doctor 'downplayed' the seriousness of 'oral herpies' and said its just basically someone with cold sores....

The last time I had sex prior to testing was December 28, 2012. Yes, it was unprotected. I had my test done on May 1, 2013. No, I do not have a regular sex partner. I've had sex once since I got my results, but it was protected sex, and he was award of my "diagnosis." I did get my WB kit from the University of Washington. I'm unsure if I should have it done. What bothers me is the lab results and my physician's office telling me I'm positive, but my IgG score for HSV 2 is negative. I may be incorrect, but even if I had previous exposure to herpes 2, wouldn't I still test positive for the antibodies? I know you cannot tell me what to do, but would you suggest the WB test for me? It's expensive if its not needed.

thank you for posting all that! it really is quite helpful :)

the immnoblot has the same false positive issues that the herpeselect elisa testing has.  not likely you really have hsv2 with your follow up negative hsv2 igg.

how long prior to testing had you last had sex? do you have a regular partner?

Also, do you think maybe my physician's office is telling me I'm positive because the lab results say I'm positive for HSV 2, although my HSV 2 IgG level is negative (0.90)? I could see the confusion of the lab results say positive when in fact my IgG is negative. I cannot comprehend why they are conflicting results. Thank you!

I don't think so. Here are my exact results:
HSV TYPE SPECIFIC IMMUNOBLOT
HSV 1 IgG Antibody- Positive
HSV 2 IgG Antibody- Positive
These results indicate prior exposure to both herpes simplex 1 & 2.

HSV, IgM I/II Combination
0.91 Ratio

HSV I/II Combination
HSV, IgM I/II Combination  51.0

HSV 1 and 2 Specific Ab, IgG
HSV 1 IgG, Type Specific 3.15
HSV 2 IgG, Type Specific 0.90

I hope this helps. I need to know is the western blot is necessary for me. Thank you.

obviously they don't understand the testing that they are offering :(

any chance it was a combined hsv1/2 igg result and then a type specific hsv2 igg result without hsv1 testing?  ( if you have the results in front of you to check this )

Grace,
I'm very confused. I called my physician's office this morning. On my lab results, it does say that I'm positive for both herpes 1 & 2, that I've had prior exposure to both, but like I said, my HSV 2 IgG is 0.90. The lady that I spoke to at the physician's office was rude and very bluntly told me that, "You are positive. Just because you tested negative on the hsv 2 does not mean that you haven't had previous exposure. The only reason your number is so low is because you don't have an outbreak. You are positive, so do what you want. If you feel the western blot is necessary, then do so, but I'm just telling you like it is."  I'm still so confused. Could you please help me?

On my results, it says that I'm positive for both hsv 1 and 2. Then it gives lab values, and like I said before, my IgG value was 0.90. I will definitely get with my provider to better understand these results. Thank you for removing the second post, and thank you for your help.

I removed your other post since your phone has a mind of its own...lol

you are absolutely correct - the hsv2 igg was negative. I'd give your provider a call monday and ask why you were told that you have hsv2. perhaps you were told in error that you also had hsv2?
