HSV-1 on Genitals

I've just been diagnosed with HSV-1. I am just getting over my first outbreak. To my understanding, HSV-1 is oral herpes?Does this mean when my outbreak is over I most likely won't have another one unless I have oral sex or intercourse with someone that's infected? I'm a little confused because I hear that most people have HSV-1, so can I transmit it if I'm not having an outbreak. Is it true that there's no shedding like HSV-2? My doctor says I don't need to take acyclovir anymore after I take these for 10 days. I am so confused!

How were you diagnoised with HSV-1?  Was it just a visual diagnosis or blood test or what? Both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can infect either site oral or genitial.  The main difference is on reoccurance rates and shedding rates.

HSV-1 Genitially does sometimes reoccur but it is normal to go a long period of time with no outbreaks.  Though HSV-1 genitially doesn't have as high reoccurances as HSV-2 Genitial.  This is mainly because the virus doesn't prefer the genitial area.  You will shed the virus 3-5% of days out of a year.  You will not know that you are shedding as the virus doesn't cause an outbreak during that time but is active on the skin.

The virus will reactivate at any time.  We don't know what causes the virus to activate but there are situations were stress and a few other things may cause the virus to become activite.  Taking antivirial (acyclovir) isn't really needed with HSV-1 since it doesn't shed that often and it doesn't have the reoccurances as HSV-2 does in the genitial area.

If your partner has HSV-1 already you don't pose much of a risk to him to catching it again.  Though the same applies avoid sexual contact during outbreaks.  You can still catch HSV-2.

I also recommend reading the free herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com plus watching the patient counseling video on the same site. both are terrific resources for more info for you and your partners.
