Cold sores

Can you get a cold sore by sharing food? Like an apple? What about kissing someone who just kissed someone else with one? I'm worried about my toddler.

No. Herpes simplex virus is much harder to transmit than this, and never been known to be transmitted by food. Kissing is possible, but the risk from any single kiss is one in thousands.

This really isn't something to be worried about. Your child could well get oral herpes one of these days, since up to half of all adults in the US are infected with HSV type 1, mostly acquired in childhood. But if and when it happens, it probably will be from another child. HSV transmission is very common in places like day care, kindergarten, etc.
