Hooray. It's that time of year again. Using Valacyclovir for Oral Outbreaks

Well, the past couple of weeks have been interesting.

I live in Utah, so the air is really really dry right now due to the winter weather. About 2 weeks ago, I cut myself with my shaving razor on my lip while trying to shave my mustache hair. Then there's this guy I'm kind of seeing, and he has quite the amount of facial hair...and I'm pretty sure this cut rubbed up against it at some point.

What was even more inconvenient is that the area where the cut was turned into a cold sore, I could tell from all the tingling and stuff coming on. I figured oh whatever, it will go away, so I put Carmex on it, and it healed up. Then I have a very bad habit of picking at healed sores...and I probably should have left it alone. Add emotional and physical stress from the past couple of weels, and now it's waaaaaaaay worse, and transitioned into a full outbreak. I've had it like this before, but boy oh boy I forgot how much this hurt.

No need to worry about the guy I'm seeing, we've already talked about STDs and stuff and we both have HSV-1 orally, no HSV-2. But I happened to have leftover Valtrex from my HSV-2 misdiagnosis. I called my doctor and she said it was OK to take this with the outbreak I'm having.

But I first remember when I was diagnosed with HSV-2 the person who diagnosed me put me on 500mg tablets 3 times a day because he thought I was in outbreak, and then I was just on it once a day for maintenance following the 7 day course of 3 a day. Would it be a good idea to be using this 3 times a day if I get an outbreak? Or would that be overkill?
