I have HSV2

Thank you for all the information you provide to us. I've had cold sores for many years, never researched HSV1 prior to now and treated those cold sores with abreva.  In July 2008 i was feeling discomfort in the anal area, i went to my gyn and she said it was herpes, took samples of the sores and a week later she called me to tell me that yes i have genital herpes. i was in a 5 year relationship STD free, changed partners in December of 07 and have only been with him since then, he hasn't had sex with anyone else since we're a couple either. he says he doesn't have herpes and will go for testing soon, he is being supportive but i'd feel better if i knew if i've had the virus long before him (i'm concerned about my previous partners status with whom i was for 5 years). I am frustrated with the frequency of outbreaks, they happen every month right after my menstrual cycle ends. i have rx for valtrex 2x day for 10 days for when i get outbreaks but the last outbreak was in a different place, it was a blister on one side of my vagina. i didn't get valtrex, i applied abreva because my doctor said i could. Is it too late to go for blood test to find out when i was infected with HSV2? -will the area of outbreak change every time or did i cause it go from my rectum to vagina? -do the sample of my lesions that the doctor took in july give her the IGG numbers that everyone seems to know about?

Thank you so much for your reply-he has an appointment this month, the  week i found out, he felt a some symptoms like discomfort urinating, a few purple bumps on his thighs but no symptoms again. i will talk to my doctor about daily meds but valtrex is so expensive and my doctor seems to know very little about this :(      thank you again.

First off - stop wasting your money on abreva!  It barely got FDA approval to say it heals cold sores faster because it only heals them about half a day sooner than using a placebo.  For the price of that teeny weeny tube - not worth it!!!  It also is completely ineffective on genital herpes which is why it was instead marketed for oral herpes ( I guess they hated to waste all that money they spent on research ).

You can have herpes ob's anywhere in the entire boxer short area. They won't always be in the same location though most folks do have their "usual" areas for ob's.  The sacral nerve ganglia is where the virus sets up permanent housekeeping so when it reactivates - it can travel down any of those nerves to cause visible lesions.

If you are having ob's monthly then you would benefit more from daily suppressive therapy than from treating each ob as it happens.  Talk to your doctor about getting a prescription for acyclovir or valtrex to take every single day. The herpes handbook at www.westoverheights.com goes into more details on this for more reading. Why have ob's monthly if you don't have to?

At this point a herpes blood test for you is only going to tell you what you already know - that you have hsv1 and hsv2.  It's your bf who needs the blood test at this point.  When is he getting one?
