I was just diagnosed with herpes, and I've been taking Valtrex for 3 days...

Hey, this is all new to me and I'm hoping I can get a few questions answered about my condition. 1) Is there a test that tells you which version of the virus you have? My doctor told me I tested positive for the herpes simplex virus, but didn't say 1 or 2. When I asked him which one I had, he said they go together...I have no idea what that means. I have multiple cold sores that have sprung up on my face for about a week, but I'm wondering if I have genital as well.

2) How long does Valtex take to work? I've been taking it for 3 days, twice a day, 1 gm, and I've been taking L-Lysine 1000mg tablets like they're candy, but I still have the sores on my philtrum/slightly above my lip. The sores never cracked, busted, or broke open, but they're still there. Today, I started putting lemon juice on them and decided to only eat eggs and chicken until they go away.

3) What kind of vitamins should I add to my diet to make sure this happens to me as little as possible? L-Lysine, Garlic tablets, multivitamin 1 a day, and lemon juice are things that I've read good things about. What else should I take?

4) I've been drinking Beyond Tangy Tangerine lately because it claims to have over 100 essential vitamins, amino acids, and nutrients for the body. Has anyone been successful with this product for fighting HSV?

Thanks for all your help, this is new to me and I'm trying to make the best of it. One night stands were never my strong suit, although that's how I ended up with this virus...My ex of 3 1/2 years dumped me and I went out and contracted HSV the same week I it happened. This is a difficult thing to deal with, but it's even harder when you contracted it out of depression for a girl that you let get away.

It would let me post the chart!

Negative is less than .91
Equivocal is between .91 and 1.09
Positive is more than 1.09

Ok, so I finally received my test results from my doctor...the guy was busy and I wasn't able to talk to him about them. I had to pick these up from his receptionist.

Negative - 1.09

HSV 1/2 IgG Rflx 1-2 Type Sp - 6.5 H

HSV 1 IgG, Type Spec - .99 H

HSV 2 IgG, Type Spec - <.90

Ok, so my HSV 2 test shows that I tested below negative and my HSV 1 test shows I tested in the center for Equivocal. What is the 6.5 for if my specific tests are negative/equivocal? Wouldn't a 6.5 for the virus show that I clearly have antibodies for one of the types? I figured it'd be well above 1.09 if that were the case.

Thank you for helping out with the predicament.

these sound like something non-herpes related. follow up on them with a dermatologist if your regular provider is stumped.

Ok, thanks for the assistance. Anyway,

I have two separate pimple-like bumps above my lip. One is one my philtrum and the other is above the left corner of my mouth. They don't hurt, they've been there for a week, and I've been taking 1 gm Valtrex for 4 days now. I tried popping one of them today, but it wouldn't budge. The thing still doesn't hurt, though. Does this sound like something herpes related, or is my positive test result an odd coincidence? I haven't done anything with anyone for almost two months, and this is the first time I believe I might be having an outbreak. Is it odd to get such bumps 60 days after exposure? This condition is rather confusing at the moment...

Thanks

knowing your type is important. ask your provider to call the lab and see if your specimen is still there to type. they should be following cdc guidelines and having all lesion cultures typed.

dietary changes don't do much for herpes - either oral or genital. same with lysine. listen to mom and eat your vegetables and a well balanced diet.

you don't want to be putting lemon juice on cold sores!!  that will irritate them more and cause them to linger!!
