Increase in Herpes Outbreaks

Im a 32 year old male and have had HSV for over 10 years now was only getting about 3 to 4 outbreaks a year without taking meds. Starting January of this year after moving to a Colombia from the the US I started getting more outbreaks(OB). Ive had 4 already since moving here. Im not sure why suddenly im getting more outbreaks . I even went and got tested for HIV in March and my results came back negative. I only had unprotected sex with my girlfriend who also has has been tested for for HIV and she is also negative. The increase in outbreaks came before we had unprotected sex. My OB are also a little different, they seem bigger with more pus filled and one popped up in a new location on the side which I've never had an OB before. I just recovered from OB last week and already today I felt the tingle and pain of new OB wanting to come through. Ive started to self medicate myself  with a daily dose of Valtrex 500mg hoping that will stop the increase im seeing. Any clues to whats going on? My anxiety is killing me right now.

If the 500 mg doesn't help, up yourself to 1000 mg, and see if that does.

I don't know where you lived in the US, but it could be a change of climate (like if you moved from Minnesota or Maine to Columbia), a change in diet, stress, etc.

You might also want to make sure you don't have a secondary infection, like another STD, a urinary tract infection, etc., or something other than HIV that is affecting your immune system. Even a change in sleep can trigger herpes outbreaks.

If you shave your genital area, try stopping that for awhile, especially if you changed shaving products when you moved. If you want to groom, try a clipper or something.

I hope you find some relief soon!

Oh and since you are feeling an outbreak coming on, you might want to increase the valtrex dose to the outbreak dose -

Valacyclovir 500 mg orally twice a day for 3 days
OR
Valacyclovir 1 g orally once a day for 5 days

You might be able to stop it before it starts.
