Is this HSV 1 symptom? - To Terri

Dear Terri,

Please clarify my doubts, 12 days back i had sex with a CSW.

1. I kissed her lips 3-4 times, each time it was just a casual touch for a brief period of 1 or 2 seconds without fluid exchange, i didnt see any visible sore on her lips. On 9th day from exposure, i saw a small ulcer inside the mouth (in between inner lip line and gum) and 2-3 mm away from the ulcer i saw 4-5 red dots (looked like if you draw a line of 0.5mm with a sharp pencil).

-- I met my Dermatologist, he prescribed Valcylovir for 5 days, i took the pills 2 times a day, after 2 days the red dots disappeared and on 3rd day from taking the pills the ulcer disappeared ie. today.

2. Yesterday morning i saw one red dot (5-6 mm away from the earlier spot which looked like as i mentioned earlier), by evening the new red dots too disappeared.

-- what i see today is not seen next day, what i see in the morning is not seen in the evening.

I met a STD specialist yesterday, he saw the fading ulcer and almost healed red dots for a brief moment. He said its not due to herpes. I doubt had he really examined thoroughly.

I am too scared to eat anything, to sleep, to brush, to see inside my mouth every morning. I am unable to handle the pressure. Please reply if the ulcer and red dots are herpes symptoms.

My concern is:
1. What are these red dots, it appeared and disappeared in max 1.5 days to 2 days, is it a sign of Herpes?
2. It disappeared without trace is it because of the antiviral pills, if yes, is it a cause of herpes?
3. I have crossed 12 days from last exposure, am i still at risk to look out for new symptoms?
4. Right now i feel like i have stuffed someting inside my leftside cheek (on the same side where i saw the red dots). If i press the cheek from outside my mouth its paining but not on the other side.

P.s: On 10th day morning (from exposure) gave my blood sample for HSV 1&2 IGG and IGM tests, it came back negative.
Thanks.

It is not a good idea to be taking the valtrex prior to future antibody testing so I hope you are not taking it anymore.  It is possible that the medicine, taken early for quite a while, will make the testing inaccurate.

I honestly think after rereading your post that you contracting herpes is extremely unlikely.  Your symptoms don't sound herpetic.

Lets start with your sexual experience.  You mentioned that you kissed her 3-4 times briefly.  any other kind of sexual contact?  give or receive oral sex?  Intercourse with a condom?  Have you ever in your life had a cold sore on your lip or in you nose or on your face?

the dots don't sound herpetic to me.  they are healing too fast, and they aren't really significant in their presentation, if I am reading your notes correctly.  they resolve quickly.  was any swab testing done of the dots?  did the doctor who started you on valtrex think that they looked classically like herpes or did you ask for the medicine anyway?

the answers to these questions will help me help you best.

It doesn't sound like herpes to me, no.  Herpes doesn't normally recur inside the mouth, rather, outside the mouth.  It sometimes is shed from inside the mouth, however.

Dear Terri,

I think i have explained the symptoms bit incorrectly.

I said 4-5 red dots but they were actually tiny cuts inside mouth because i was able to touch the cuts with my tongue and i am sure it was like cuts in the skin which healed in 4 days as i was taking valcyclovir.

Do you think its sign of hsv 1.

Please let me know your expert opinion.

Dear Doctor,

I am not taking Valtrex anymore. I stopped taking it since wednesday.

I will keep telling these words to my mind, "I honestly think after rereading your post that you contracting herpes is extremely unlikely.  Your symptoms don't sound herpetic".

My heartfelt thanks for your expert advise.

Dear Terri,

My dermatologist advised me to consult a Psychiatrist. I did and trying to keep my cool.

But out of anxiety and emotional stress, i gave my blood samples on day 15th that is today for HSV 1 & 2 - IGM.

I will get my results tomorrow.

Wish i hear from you at the earliest.

Dear doctor,

My doctor has prescribed Valcyclovir 1000 mg which i started taking as soon as i saw the symptoms. I saw the symptoms on saturday evening and by Tuesday morning, the ulcer and the red dots disappeared ( i took alomst 5 valtrex pills of 1000 mg, twice daily during the time).

If its because of Herpese, Do you think it would have shorten the severity or duration of the primary symptoms?

or Its not herpetic symptoms at all?

I am worried Terri, Please give me your expert opinion.

Thanks a lot.

8. No swab testing done.
9. The doctor is not an STD expert, so his observation did not tell anything about classic herpes or not?

Thanks a lot Doctor. I really appreciate your prompt response, it has brought a sea of relief to me.

1. First i washed my boxer shorts area with lotion and water. She touched my shaft (unprotected) with her tip of the tongue for less than 3 seconds, she didnt come near to the head of the penis. Then I received protected oral for less than a minute.
2. I had a protected vaginal sex (she was on top of me for a minute). 2 Condoms and both were intact when removing. I washed my boxer shorts area (before and after sex) with soap and water shortly after removing the condoms.
3. No, i never had any cold sore ever in my life.
4. I did not give oral sex to her except touching her dry lips (she has applied lipstick) with my dry lips briefly.
5. The doctor is a Dermatologist, not a STD specialist. For precaution he prescribed the medicine to me. Next morning (after 16 hrs from the time of symptoms) he suggested me to take HSV 1&2 for IgG amd IgM. Result = Negative for all. I gave the blood sample 16 hrs after i saw the symptoms.
6. After 2 days from the day symptoms appeared, I have taken a second opinion from another doctor he briefly looked at the healing ulcer and the fading red dot, he said it doesnt look like Herpes and there is no need for Valtrex (yet suggested to complete the course).

** 7. Did the ulcer and red dots healed because of taking the pills at the very early time of noticing its appearance (i took the first pill within 2 hrs)?

I do not know how long it was there before, i had a spicy food and that made me to feel/have something inside the mouth and thats how i saw the symptoms.

Since yesterday night, i do not see any dots or ulcer inside the mouth. Its been 13 days over since the exposure.

Looking forward your advise. THANK YOU.
