I've had an outbreak on my back and my arm, but never my genitals, could I still have HSV-2?

A few months ago I had a small outbreak on my upper back, the doctor diagnosed it as either HSV-1 or shingles. I thought it was odd since I had already has shingles at the age of 19. However, I did as the docotr ordered and took Valtrex 3 times a day for a week. The sore went away within a couple of days.

Just over a month later I had the same outbreak on my upper arm, went to a different doctor and he said it was a cold sore. He prescribed Valtrex twice a day for one day, which I did but then noticed another breakout just above the one present, so I upped the dosage of the Valtrex and it went away.

Then I went to see an Infectious Disease Specialist and he drew blood, and the tests came back postive for HSV-2. Is that possible considering I have had outbreaks but never on my genitals? Could there have a been a misdiagnosis between HSV-1 and HSV-2?

Your regular doctor or your dermatologist can do the lesion culture.  Also any ER can do it too if it occurs on a weekend.

Yes you can call the clinic and ask them to read you your results ( you might have to wait for a nurse or your doctor to call you back to read them to you). Due to HIPAA guidelines you have free access to your entire chart and every test result in it.

Unfortunately I don't have a copy of the test results. Is it possible to call the doctor's office and ask for one?

I played sports when I was younger, never mudwrestling.

What type of doctor is best to see for the culture?

I can best help you if you post the results of your blood test - ie hsv1 igg .45 and hsv2 igg .99 or whatever they are.  That way I can be sure you were properly tested and see if you need additional testing or not.

The next time these appear, be seen within 48 hours and get a lesion culture done. That's the only way to know for sure if what's going on there is due to hsv or not.

Have you played sports before or done anything like mudwrestling and such?
