It is generally only contagious if an area that is infected or is shedding is rubbed onto another person and typically in a sensitive area such as mouth and genital areas.
Transmission from touching the area (hand or object like a glass) is extremely unlikely, but possible and hence avoided. Unless she touched the cold sores before touching you, transmission is impossible.
The baby is under no danger of infection from an oral infection in the mother before birth. As an infant though, kids are at risk from infection by family members.
can you get it from hand to hand contact?
Hi, well that is certainly a symptom, it would be a good time for her to see a doctor and have them swabbed for testing to confirm her status or a blood test. If its infact herpes it is indeed contagious , of course considering you dont have it already. Its estimated that close to 70% of the adult population would test positive for herpes as was contracted at childhood.
