Need help with my results

Hi Doctor,

I've been reading a lot about your comments and something tells me I should rather consult you before making a conclusion.

Here's my story...
I'm a male close to 27 years.
I was tested for Herpes HSV-1 and HSV-2 few days back and here were the results :
HSV1 - 2.69 , HSV2 - 1.03  as per the index legend.
1.10 - Positive
The reason for getting tested was I was having a burning sensation on my penis after urination (not during) and went to a doctor. The doctor (female) took a look at my penis and said I had cold sores although I could not see any myself.
I asked her about an inflammation I had on the tip of my penis and she said that it is just an inflammation and would go away.   However, she wasn't sure and prescribed me a UTI antbiotic and Valtrex.  She took my blood and urine sample and sent for a test.   The urine came back fine,  the blood test was -ve for all STD's except for the herpes results above.  The doctor did not inform me to stop antibiotics and I continued the whole course of antibiotics and valtrex.

I wanted to know if I really do have Herpes and if so which one - HSV1 or HSV2 caused the burning after urination.
The reason I am asking you this is I've read your posts and learnt that anything below 3.5 are suspects .
Please let me know based on the symptoms I mentioned whether I should go for another test or see another doctor.

FYI, I never had any occurence of a cold sore that I can remember either on the face or on my penis until this episode and my last possible exposure to unprotected sex was 2.5 years ago.  If I had herpes would it take that long to show up ? I've had many episodes of fever, fatigue earlier over last 2.5 years but  I did not have any possible symptoms of Herpes.   Just wondering why it showed up suddenly when I was doing just fine.

Just before the day I started having this burning sensation and inflammation on my penis head, I'd noticed a hair follicle below the foreskin on my penis which I tried to remove with a piece of cloth and had hurt my penis momentarily.  Could it be that I offended a nerve which led to the inflammation or is it due to the virus ?  Or could it be a side effect from the antibiotic I had for UTI unnecessarily.

I'm really feeling very down thinking that I've to live with the virus forever and would pass it over to others ( I do have an active sex life), please shed some light on this.  Appreicate your comments as always.

Thanks in advance.

eating yogurt just helps put the good bacteria back into your bowels. it doesn't have the strains of bacteria that colonize the urogenital tract.

just sprinkle the powder on your genitals. don't pull back your foreskin or anything.

Hi, Grace

Looks like its a Yeast Infection as the pain started to decrese from the day i have started having Yoghurt (i read Yoghut help treat Yeast Infections)
Nevertheless, as you had advised me, i have started using Corn Starch based powder (Johnson Baby Powder), but i have one question, Did you want me to apply the powder under my foreskin and my urethera where i have the inflammation, directly?

Wanted to consult with you wether its safe to do so?

Thanks again..

do I need to count exactly how many times now I've told you I don't think your hsv1 is genital?

Hi, Grace

You know what, just for the sake of mental peace, i again took a test, and now it came,
HSV-1 as 2.19 +ve, and
HSV-2 as 0.91 -ve.

So, my question is, do you think i can have HSV-1 genitally? And if yes, then would it take so long to show up, as my last unprotected oral sex was 2.5years ago?

Thanks in advance.

Just irritation can be many , many things going on.  It's doubtful this is related at all to hsv1.

Yes indeed yeast can be an issue after antibiotics as can irritation.  Try going naked when you can ( wear loose boxers around the house or a bathrobe so you don't scare your neighbors ). Sprinkle a corn starch based powder on your genitals before getting dressed and as needed during the day to cut down on friction from clothing rubbing against your penis too.  Drink plenty of fluids and leave the little guy away ( no prodding, poking or constantly looking at him ).   If it's not better in a week, return to your provider for further evaluation.

Sorry to return back, but coudnt stay away from seeking yet another advice of yours.

I have been having an inflammation on the tip of my penis and my urethera is constantly red, it hurts when the tip of my penis(below the foreskin) touches my underpants.
I have been on Valtrex 1000mg pills for the last 10 -12 days.
Wanted to know if it was due to genital HSV -1 would it take this long to heal with Valtrex? Is this normal? How long do the symptoms of genital HSV-1 take to disappear?

Or, could this indiacte some kind of Yeast infection or any other infection as i was on Cipro unnecessarily for 8days (16*500mg pills).

Thanks once again as always.

equivocal is still negative. if it's been 2 1/2 years since you last had sex, it's a clear negative.

you can have hsv1 on the genitals, it takes a lesion culture of active symptoms to diagnose it though.

Thanks so much for your prompt responses !
You have really been doing a very nobel job.
I just had one more for you....

HSV-2 - 1.03 was marked as Equivocal in my result and I wasn't clear what that meant, my doc. said it was +ve ,  am now confirmed that it is -ve (after you said that). Thanks for the comfort feeling here.

HSV-1 - 2.69  - You mentioned this is +ve .  If so, would it just be responsible for causing cold sores on the face or could it affect the genitals as well.  Just trying to rule out the possibility of herpes like symptoms my doctor saw on my penis.
Also, is it possible to have HSV-1 just on the genitals and not on the face ?

Thank you for all you do !

your hsv1 is +. your hsv2 is negative on your blood tests.

follow up on this as needed with your providers.

Also, I've been taking 1000mg of Valtrex for the last 10 days. The burning is gone but I do have inflammation on the tip of my penis which pains when it touches my underpants.
Do you think I should go to another doctor and get other tests done or continue valtrex for some more time and see if it improves.

Thanks much !

So what do you think about my test result? It was HSV-1 as 2.69 and HSV-2 as 1.03. Do you think it could be low positive or false positive?

you can't have cold sores on your penis. Cold sores are oral. You can have ulcers on your penis though.

burning after urination isn't likely to be due to herpes. When you have a herpes ob in the urethra, it bothers you pretty much all the time and isn't comfortable at all.

Most adults do have hsv1 orally and most of them don't get obvious cold sores to know it.  You have no reason to suspect at this time that your hsv1 isn't oral.

should you get a return of symptoms, be seen again and follow up on it more. if a provider says they see ulcers on your penis, they should be doing cultures on them.  If you haven't had a return of symptoms since this initial incident, I wouldn't bother with any more follow up.

Thanks for you reply,

I never had any cold sore on my lip or face any where. The Doc saw cold sores in my penis,(but i could not see any sores there) not at my face or anywhere else. yes i do have a regular partner and i always had protected sex, but my last episode of unprotected oral sex was 2.5years ago.  that is what confuses me as to how could I get an outbreak (if any) after 2.5 years , that too when I was healthy.

By the way what do you think looking at my test results, do you think it could be herpes?

Thanks once again !

most adults do have hsv1 orally. it's very common.  if your provider saw obvious cold sores - were they on your lips or inside your mouth?

how long prior to all of this had you last had sex? do you have a regular partner?

your symptoms don't really sound like hsv2 genitally at this point. continue to follow up with your provider if symptoms continue.
