Oral transmission

I have genital herpes and have NEVER had oral herpes/cold sores. About 18 days ago I gave unprotected oral sex to a man and he is concerned/worried that I could have transmitted herpes to him. What are the chances that this could have happened? I did not have any oral sores at all on my mouth during the act.

If you had a positive swab 11 years ago, it may not have been properly typed.

I suggest you get a blood test to confirm which type you have. No outbreaks since the initial one is suggestive that HSV1 is a possibility.

You cannot transfer genital herpes by giving oral sex. With no oral symptoms, it is very unlikely you are infected in that region as well.

Thanks so much for your response Grace. I never received the igg test to know my full status. My doctor performed a lesion culture and I do understand that genital herpes can't travel to my mouth area. He is worried because he did some research and of course he discovered that you can have both oral and genital herpes. He's concerned because he was unsure if I had oral herpes as well. I told him that in the 11+ years I've had herpes I've never experienced cold sores. It will be three weeks tomorrow that the incident occurred. I told him to visit his doctor if he feels concerned but I reassured him that I believed he was fine.

Your genital herpes stays in your genital area. In order for someone to contract your genital herpes infection, they would have to have direct skin on skin contact with your genital area. Make sense? Your genital herpes infection doesn't travel up to your mouth to be transmitted to a partner when you perform oral sex on them.

do you have hsv1 or hsv2 genitally? Did you ever have type specific herpes igg blood testing done to know your full herpes status or were you just diagnosed through a lesion culture and typing of active lesions?

Typically genital herpes symptoms occur within 3 weeks of contracting the virus. Your former partner should stop worrying. Also protected oral sex is important to both partners. You can contract std's from both giving and receiving so protecting yourself is in both partners interest!

What do you mean here:
"If he has had no symptoms in 18 days then he is clear. If he already has oral cold sores, he is in the clear!"

DO you only get HSV-1 symptoms in first 18 days?

Thank you for your response but I'm not sure I understood your first sentence. Are you saying that if I have genital herpes and someone perfoms oral sex on me that they can't contract herpes orally?

You cannot transfer the herpes from your genital region. This is simply not at all possible.

Most people he would have received oral sex from have HSV1. You may or may not have HSV1.

If he has had no symptoms in 18 days then he is clear. If he already has oral cold sores, he is in the clear!
