PARANOID

My question are:
1. How likely is it to pass HSV1 someone through kissing?
2. Can having shingles make the HSV1 test positive?
3. Is there a way to tell if I'm one of those people who carries the virus but doesn't give to people? I share things like lipstick, gloss and drinks with my friends (i know I shouldn't) and not one of them has ever gotten a cold sore.
4.My doctor told me herpes can be spread through skin to skin contact. Is this true even if we don't kiss? (My boyfriend and I don't kiss or exchange oral sex bc he's afraid of getting the cold sores and I just fear I still could of passed the virus to him even though we didn't kiss or exchange oral sex)
5.Should I worry about passing this on or am I being too paranoid?

Terri, Thank you for responding to me.

I have a few more thoughts:

Yes I get cold sores. I was asking if shingles can make the HSV1 test positive because I get shingles often and get colds sores rarely but my results for the HSV1 IGG was super high which I don't understand because I think I've gotten colds sores twice in my lifetime. Can this be due to a immune problem? I have other health problems.

Well it may seem like that but It's not okay for me not getting kissed I learned to deal with it because he has problems and I'm too afraid to leave him and go back out into the dating world because I feel like someone might react the same he did or worse. I don't want to worry about passing this on to someone else. I'm young and I want to get as much info about it now so I don't have to worry about it in the future. Whenever I ask my doctors they're like it's not a big deal just don't kiss or perform oral sex when your have a present cold sore.

1. How likely is it to pass HSV1 someone through kissing?
It is possible, yes, but without a cold sore present, a little less likely.  Was it a lot of kissing or just a little?  Are you infected or is someone else?  I'm a little confused.

2. Can having shingles make the HSV1 test positive?
No, these are two different viruses, and shingles does not make the herpes antibody test look falsely positive.

3. Is there a way to tell if I'm one of those people who carries the virus but doesn't give to people? I share things like lipstick, gloss and drinks with my friends (i know I shouldn't) and not one of them has ever gotten a cold sore.
Yes, you can get a herpes antibody test and see if you are HSV 1 antibody positive.  This means that you are infected with HSV 1, but through a blood test, you can't know if the infection is oral or genital, though statistically, more likely to be oral.

4.My doctor told me herpes can be spread through skin to skin contact. Is this true even if we don't kiss? OK, so you have cold sores and your boyfriend doesn't.  No, you couldn't transfer this to him through other kinds of touching.  So if you know that you have oral HSV 1, then you can have intercourse without concern of transmitting this, but you are correct that you giving him oral sex could transmit the virus to his genitals.

5.Should I worry about passing this on or am I being too paranoid?
Well, I can't really answer that for someone else.

If he is worried about getting it, then he is.  Some people are, some are not.  But if over half the population is infected, he is going to have a bit of a challenge finding someone not infected, whether they have symptoms or not.  I would suggest that you go on daily antiviral therapy to reduce the risk of infecting him as a place to start.  That may help to reassure him, but he may still be worried about kissing.  For me, not kissing would be a deal breaker, but for you, it may be OK, and it actually sounds like it is.  So if it works, great.  This is such a personal decision for everyone, it has to be up to the two of you.  I can tell you that there is risk of infecting him, yes, and you are not paranoid.

Sorry I didn't mean to sound rude I'm just a little impatient.

Last time he was tested was in Jan and he was negative for HSV1 (we were already together).

I doubt he'll get tested again he's afraid of doctors.

I think Terri Warren may be traveling.  From what I've read, up to 50 pct of the people have HSV1 and it is the least stigmatized version.

Why don't you have him tested?  There are decent odds he already has hsv1...

Terri should get back w/you soon but in the interim you might be able to get Grace to give you some insight.
