Question to all - concerned for lil sister - plz help - HSV1

Hi All,

I really need some answers from this board.

Around 2 months ago (first week of March 2009), I had sex with a girl in my college. It was protected sex. However she gave unprotected oral to me and we kissed but I didn't perform oral on her.

2 days after that event, I went to visit my family in Seattle. I spent 3-4 weeks there. Around 23-24th March I got some fever and on that day I was feeling little tired so my mom tried to give me some head massage. After like 5 mins, mom gets a phone call and my little sister who is 17 years old, she gave me some head massage and rubbed my eyes with her hands. She massaged my forehead, ears and eyes for 20-25 mins. She did it again after 2-3 days (on 26th March) for 15-20 mins.

Then I came back to college on 28 March and my girlfriend told me that she is HSV-1 positive which was a surprise to me. I freaked out and went to the doctor for my blood test which unfortunately came back positive.
It was something like HerpesSelect AB HSV-1 IGG 5.10. And the doctor told me that I have HSV-1. HSV-2 was negative. I was devastated and it really made me go through some emotional trauma. In fact I am still going through it.

On 16th April, my mom told me that my sister got some viral fever. Our family doctor gave her some medication and she recovered from it in 4-5 days.

On 21th April, I called my family to just check about my sister and they told me that now she got some white little sores inside her mouth (inside her lips. There were like 7-8 little sores. 4 on the left side and 4 on the right side of inside lip. canker sores?) And also some small blisters on and under her tongue. She never ever got this kind of sores before in her entire life.
And she told me that it was like burning. They went to the doctor and he said that it might be because of some medicines which she took when she was suffering from fever and he gave her some vitamins. And today I checked with her and it seems sores and blisters are gone now and she is feeling much better.

I have been reading a lot online and really worried if these are the symptoms of HSV-1. None in my family has it and she never got sores like this before. Did she get it from me? Because as I mentioned earlier, she massaged my forehead and rubbed my eyes for 15-20 mins two times. I was diagnosed HSV-1 positive on 1st April otherwise I wouldn't let her touch me.
I haven't been sexually active after 5-6th March and I never had any kind of symptoms(outbreak) so I don't even know if my HSV-1 is oral or genital. No symptoms at all for me.

But from what I have researched so far HSV-1 can be transmitted from skin to skin contact even though there are no symptoms (Asymptomatic transmission). So is it possible for her to get it from me by rubbing my eyes or massaging my forehead?
Because if she got it from me like that, I will never be able to forgive myself throughout my entire life. I am really a horrible person and seriously can't take this burden for my entire life. I feel like, I have ruined her future, her dating life, married life, kids etc... The more I think about this, the more I feel disgusting about myself.

Could someone plz tell me if it is possible to contract HSV-1 like this? Or they might be canker sores?

Thanks for reading this,

There are no cures for any viral illness yet.  NONE.

Yes hsv1 orally can migrate up the nerves and infect the eyes. It happens but not frequently.

No, your sister didn' t get herpes from massaging your face.

hey grace,

thanks for your reply.. but I still have this curiosity, can hsv-1 be transmitted by massaging forehead and eyes of a person?

Vance2335, it is a common myth that HSV-1 is not a big deal but in reality it is, specially if transmittied to eyes and brain. I found this information on the main herpes official site.
Once you are infected with this, you never know when it infects the other part of your body. There have been many cases where people have been infected with eye herpes after 10-12 years of cold sore
which is really scary. May be I am over-reacting on this because I am recently diagnosed with this virus. But this information is listed everywhere specially on wiki and some trusted sites.
If over 1/2 population has it then why don't we have cure for this? Is someone working on this at all?

It's me again. You also told me that there are many viruses that cause the symptoms I had as well. what are some of the viruses? I'm still agonizing over my HSV 1 diagnosis.

Your blood test was + so odds are that you've had hsv1 orally for far longer than you suspected.  It's most commonly transmitted thru romantic type kisses in adults.  You could've gotten this from a family member when you were a youngster or contracted it from anyone you've ever kissed.

Many, many viruses out there to cause the symptoms you've all had. Your sister was seen and the provider didn't feel it was herpes related.

Oral herpes is not a huge deal like you are making it out to be. Over 1/2 the population has it.
