HSV or misdiagnosis?

I had painful ulcerations in my vaginal area, saw my gyn, was told I had herpes, and was prescribed cream and oral medication. It went away and I have never had another outbreak. This was 20+ years ago. Since then I have been married and monogamous. I am now widowed and had to tell the person I am dating. Our question is, If it has never recurred, is that what it was? How can I best determine if I have HSV?

About 90% of those with genital herpes don't know it - no symptoms means nothing unfortunately. But, get tested so you know going forward :-)

Thanks so much for your reply.

I can't recall if a swab was ever done when I had the lesions. I neglected to mention that 2 husbands in 20 years never had any symptoms either.

I have made an appointment and will request the IgG.

I would highly suggest you get tested to be certain you even have herpes. A visual diagnosis is very often wrong.

You'd want an IgG type specific blood test.
