Red Spot After Cold Sore?

I recently developed a cold sore 2 weeks ago.  It was a bigger sore than I usually have as I have had them since I was a teenager.  It began to go through the usual healing process and I used Abreva to try and help it heal, but I think I might have messed with it too much when applying the cream and broke the sore a couple of times as well as the scab when it began healing.  Now I have no sore or scab, but the area where the sore was is now red and a tiny bit inflamed so it is still quite noticable.  I have never had this happen before and was wondering if it is common and how long it usually lasts?  It does not seem to be getting better as  I am on week 3 now since the sore first showed up and from what I remember my previous ones never took this long to heal.  Is it normal/common for this red area to show up?  Am I still capable of transmitting this to my girlfriend??  I also wanted to know if I kissed her while I still had this red area and then she performed oral sex on me am I at risk to transmitt this to my genital area?  I know I hear to usually be careful touching the genital area if you touch your sore so I was wondering if this is the same thing?

Thank you - replies are GREATLY appreciated

I have the same problem. Have been getting cold sores since teenage. I'm now 33. It used to go away completely but now redness stays forever :/ I think it's just distressed skin, leaving kind of scar from it. was trying bio oil for scarring - didn't help. tried vitamin e balm- didn't help.

The red area will go away. Sometimes it takes time but it will subside.

I'm so upset. I've had many coldsores in my life but around March 13th I got a fever and I got 2 coldsores, one on my lower left lip and it infected my upper left lip and I got another coldosre. After the bottom coldosre went away I was left with a small bump that I could feel with my tongue on the edge of my lip. It really upset me.

Yesterday I woke up and the bump was large, red, and inflamed like a blind pimple. I put coldsore cream on it but by the afternoon it was tingling and throbbing.

I put more coldsore cream on it. Today it is not tingling or throbbing but sore like a blind pimple.

PLEASE HELP i look disfigured

Anyone have any successful resolutions? I got my first cold sore from my boyfriend and it was in 2 spots close together between my lip and chin. Its been 3 weeks and it is still very noticeable and red and inflamed. It also seems to have a white middle. I went to the doctor right away to get diagnosed and he gave me Valtrex and told me about abbreva which I used the whole time and it did not help at all. It was not until I started applying tea tree oil that the cold store reduced in size and swelling.  It seems the skin is healed but I do still get a bothersome tingle or pain occasionally in that spot. What works to get this from scarring permanently and reducing the redness?

I'm having the same issue. The red spots and slight inflammation are still there (got two cold sores at once) after 3 weeks even though the sores appear to be healed. My last cold sore was 10+ years ago, but I don't think I got a red spot last time. Both times I got Rx (Zovirax before, Valtrex this time). I also wonder if using abreva this time around has contributed to the redness. I'm going to try Scar Away silicone gel now. I'm so tired of these ugly red dots above my lip ;(

I am kinda going through a similar situation...my cold sore happened over a year ago, and there is a discoloration mark left over. Not only is this mark left over but it feels irritated all the time. Like really raw and dry. I don't know what to do. I went to the doctor and they claim they cant see anything wrong, but i know what i feel and i know it was never like this before the cold sore. They told me to put a little hydrocortisone cream on it, so i am going to see if this helps and then go back. But, some days it drives me insane, I just wish i could figure it out somehow. Its one thing to get cold sores sometimes, but when you have this really irritating spot on the corner of you lip from a old cold sore...the anxiety and pressure is maximized. The spot is in the corner of my lip and it is a little red at times. My theory is it is a hypertension scar. I hope you see this and if you want you can email me at ***@****, i just want to it go back to the way it was.

Have a very similar situation. I got my cold sore in December, and it is now Almost April. I feel the irritation where the sore was constantly. It bothers me so much and can leave a red mark, not always but some days. I went to the doctor and he just said he did not see anything. I feel the lump inside my lip as well. I don't know what to do and it really sucks! Just glad I'm not the only one going through this. Although this post was over 2 years ago lol

Hi Murphy
This happened to me once earlier this year also, however it wasn't from using abreva so I'm not sure if it is related. I had a coldsore on the edge of my bottom lip and once it disappeared I was left with a red mark and after the coldsore had completely healed and I got worried it would never go away as this had never happened to me before. Luckily I had an appointment with the dermatologist a couple of days later and she say it was not uncommon and that it was just trauma to the skin because of the coldsore. She suggested sigmacort ointment which you can buy from a pharmacist and it helps reduce redness and many other things but it is important you only use a little bit as the instructions say and only if the coldsore has actually healed completely. After applying a little bit for a couple of days it completely healed. I'm sure if you go to your pharmacist and explain they will probably be able to recommend some sort of cream or ointment to help with the redness and healing. Hope this helped at all :)

I have the same thing going on except I'm on day 11 since I first got the cold sore now that the sore is gone there is a noticeable red mark left behind is yours still noticeable I am so freaked out this has never happened before. I also used Abreva this ENTIRE time and never have before and now have this red mark I will never us it again.

this isn't active oral herpes going on at this point. Either it's chapped /irritated skin leftover from the cold sore or something else entirely going on. If you feel comfortable that this is just a mark from the cold sore, just keep applying moisturizers and in time it will appear less noticeable. Typically things are far more apparent to us then they are to others because we know that it's there and obsess about it ( like when you have a zit on your face, you know it's there and swear the whole world is looking at it when they aren't....lol ).

Hi Grace, thank you for your response.  The spot / scar or whatever it is still is not getting much better.  I have been using some chap stick with Vitamin E in it daily and making sure to rub the spot thouroughly, but if anything it got just a tiny bit better.  It has been pretty much 2 weeks since the scab has gone away and this thing is still here.  I am just wondering if this is normal and if it take as long as I am experiencing to go away?  Should I keep waiting about a month and then go see someone?  I am actually in Asia so it is difficult for me to find a doctor at the moment which is why I have not gone yet.  Thank you again!

no your gf won't transmit your hsv1 back to you.

has your gf ever been tested to know her own hsv status?

odds are this is just irritated skin remaining and not an active herpes lesion. You can try moisturizing it and also holding a steeped tea bag on it several times a day as a compress. ice also helps reduce redness.

As a follow up to the question above, is it possible to pass a cold sore to her neck?  If I kissed her neck while I had a sore?
