No official Herpes diagnosis, yet.

I went to the doctor on Thursday after noticing a small lesion in my genital area. She did a swab and bloodworm. She said it may be herpes but I have to wait until later this week to find out for sure. She them gave Valtrex and ointment.

I am currently in a relationship with a guy who I've been seeing for the past 3 months. Should I tell him now (before I have a definitive diagnosis) or wait until I know/don't know later this week???

Please provide any guidance. Thank you!

I tested positive via swab and had a blood test a week later where I tested negative, showing it was a new infection. It could take a few months or more for blood to test positive. From what I understand, swab is conclusive. You likely got via oral sex from your current partner. Exactly as I did.

If it's a recent infection your bloodwork might show a negative as your body has not had enough time to generate sufficient antibodies. So if negative via blood it doesn't exclude you from having the virus. The swab has confirmed that herpes is causing the lesion.

Your blood will eventually turn positive if negative now.

Positive swab is conclusive. Does your boyfriend have cold sores? Does he perform oral sex on you? If so, he actually could be the reason you contracted the virus. I'd have him get tested as well so he doesn't blame you on cheating. Many people are uninformed that HSV1 (cold-sores) is herpes.

What did this lesion look like? Did it hurt or resemble a ulcer?

Update: the swab came back positive for HSV-1. I'm s waiting on the bloodwork. Any chance I don't really have it? Or is the positive swab conclusive?

You should also obtain a blood test as a negative swab is not negative for infection.

If you are experiencing just a single lesion it is more likely, should it be herpes, not to be a recent infection.

Tell him you've got something going on that concerns you.  Refrain from sex... Obviously.

Have you two talked about testing before?
