Specialists please

Hi, i posted a thread a couple of month ago regarding a small ulcer on my penis 7 days after having unprotected sex with my ex-girlfriend. after seeing the ulcer, i got her tested for HIV and she is negative even i was pretty sure of it.
anyways, the ulcer healed after 3 weeks, wasnt painful, followed by a swollen gland on the groin and was healed after 2 weeks as well.
now its week 11, an ulcer (smaller) exactly where the previous one was, came out yesterday and followed by a rash surrounding it today. i think this is herpes but i am totally unaware of what is herpes, how serious it is and if any treatment can be. she told me that few months ago she had some blisters on her vagina too. so since she and i are negative for hiv and syphilis, please correct if i am wrong, seems we are both positive now for herpes.
what is HSV1 and what is HSV2 ? any treatment can be ? can they be recovered ?
i am going to test tomorrow and show the rash to my doctor and the ulcer too, but meanwhile i will highly appreciate my above questions. i am also meeting with my fiance next month, what should i do to prevent her, its so hard to convince her not using condoms cause she will have doubts in me, what can be done. please help
thank you

You both need to go and be seen and get proper testing done.  Both of you having blister like lesions in the genital area is suspicious for genital herpes and needs follow up.

If you are not sure what it is then I would recommend that all of those you are talking about get a Type Specific herpes IgG blood test for HSV 1 and HSV 2. This type of test is not normally given when you have an STD panel test done unless you specifivally ask for it. To avoid dublication for your self ask call the firm that did the testing for you and see if they did this test if not get it done.

Are you in the US? If so then you can order up the testing yourself thru either www.tstd.org ( their website doesn't list just herpes testing but call them and they will do it for you - herpeselect igg for hsv1 and hsv2 is what you want to order ) or www.healthcheckusa.com. Both sites run you around $100 and you get results back in 2 days online.

thanks for the reply
none of us is diagonised in herpes, i am only saying that we both are hiv negative and hepatitis A and B negative, waht is left is herpes and syphilis, i had no secondary syphilis symtoms (rash, fever etc ...) so the only option left for me is herpes.

How were you and your ex gf  diagnosed as both having herpes? Was it a blood test and if so what type of blood test? If it was an IgG blood test that is good. If it was an IgM blood test do not rely on the results from this test. You also need to tell your  fiance about the fact that you have herpes so she can decide for herself if she wishes to continue with the relationship. .

To help you get a handle on what herpes is and treatments and how it it spread. Read the Herpes Handbook & watch the counseling DVD for free at

Once you have read this if you have any questions then someone can help you with them.
