Taking Acyclovir and having HSV I symptoms on the mouth

Hi,

I am Tom's friend.

I am taking Acyclovir for what appeared to be and ended in a positive test result via swab of the sore,  to be a primary infection of genital herpes II. Today is the 6th day since I had my first symptom, saw a doctor and started the medicine.

I am positive for Herpes I on the mouth as well.  I have been for 30 years.  Type II is newly aquired.

My question to you is, why would I be having the early signs of an outbreak on my lip if I am taking Acyclovir? Isnt it supossed to suppress the outbreak??  Does it not work as effectivly if you have both strains of the virus? I am taking 800 MG three times a day.

Thank you and I am so glad that you are here.

It's not unusual for a newly acquired genital herpes infection to trigger a recurrence of an oral herpes infection.  The acyclovir helps but doesn't completely prevent recurrences in either location.
