Vaginal shingles

I went to see an OBGYN for painful swelling and bumps in my vagina/vulva. At first he was 90% sure I had herpes. But it didn't make sense because my husband and I have only had one partner. Then as the test results came back, it showed negative for herpes and positive for a virus. Since my infection has remained only on the left side of my vagina, and since my body is behaving resistant to the acyclovir, or rather since the symptoms are still intense after a few days, the doctor is now suspecting Shingles. It does make more sense.
I did not realize this was rare - (in the vaginal area)
What I want to know is you listed symptoms for the herpes but not for the shingles. Can you describe more? It's more than itching for sure. It seems to affect the whole left side of my body, my left arm and fingers go a little numb at times.

yeah, very few of us have "good" insurance any more....sigh :(

I'd err on the side of caution and you and your partner should both seek out type specific herpes igg blood testing to see who has what. if this reoccurs, be seen within 48 hours for a repeat lesion culture.

The other thing that is hard is that all the fuss, the tests, and seeing 2 doctors is costing me a few hundred dollars. Health insurance is lame - they don't cover much more than very basic procedures, physicals and such. I have to pay for half the cost of the tests and even the doctor's fees.

Hi Grace, Thanks for your response and trying to help.

The Shingles did respond to the acyclovir very well, it just seemed a little resistant at first. The OBGYN said Shingles takes longer to heal than herpes anyway.

The family doctor I saw didn't know what I had and took a biopsy, then told me to wait a week for the results. I couldn't wait a whole week - was in alot of pain! So I went to an OBGYN and he took a swab and prescribed acyclovir right away. The swab came back neg. The biopsy came back positive for "a virus." They didn't know which virus though.
Still I showed signed of some kind of herpes, which Shingles is a form of. All signs have showed Shingles and acyclovir has helped alot.

I am now almost clear of the symptoms but it's taking weeks to really get back to normal.

even shingles would've responded to acyclovir.  also typically they also test for shingles when they do the herpes lesion culture.   if they didn't , your provider can call and ask them if they still have the culture in the lab to do so.

how long has this been going on?

a pelvic shingles outbreak would not cause symptoms in your arms too.

did your provider also swab this rash for bacteria too?

time for a trip to the dermatologist monday if at all possible.
