HSV - 1

I was recently diagnosed with HSV -1; my doctor's nurse thinks it's genital because I've had some burning/tingling sensation in my genitalia but NO lesions.  I've no other symptoms except those and was tested for yeast and bacteria. I've never had a cold sore and neither has my husband.  Is it possible to have an outbreak of HSV -1 in the genitals without lesions?  I went to the OBGYN the day after I started having symptoms and he didn't see anything that led him to think it was herpes; the nurse suggested I be tested and it came back negative for HSV -2; positive for HSV - 1.  So she told me I got it through sex; is it possible that I don't have genital HSV -1 given that I've never had an outbreak and I've been with the same person for 15 years?  Is it possible to test positive for HSV -1 and not have it in the genitalia?  The swab came back negative for HSV period.  Thank you.

i tested postive for hsv1, that is correct.  i tested negative for hsv 2.  i had a swab AND the blood test for diagnosis; both were negative for hsv2, blood was positive for hsv1. thanks for the heads up; my gyn wasn't concerned it was herpes 1 or 2, his nurse (i call her nurse ratchet) was so she ran my blood for it and was very snotty when i tested positive for hsv 1; which while in the same family as hsv2 is different in nature i understand in terms of symptoms.

so you had a blood test that came back as + for hsv1?  do I have that correct?  If so, you can not assume that your hsv1 is genital based on that.  most adults have hsv1 orally and most don't get obvious cold sores to know it.

continue to follow up on your genital symptoms with your provider or seek out a 2nd opinion from a different gyn.

Yes it is possible that you may have HSV-1 or 2 and never have an outbreak. Still possible to shed the virus, but most people have been exposed to it at one point.
