HSV1 on genitals - confused

Hi everyone - I am so confused.
On Friday, July 4 I had sex with my fiance of 7 years. The next day my vagina was incredibly sore, but that isn't uncommon as I am sensitive down there anyway. I didn't notice much that night, but the next night (Sunday the 6th) in the shower I felt a bunch of stinging. I looked down and saw 1 sore at the top of my labia.

I got out of the shower and saw a bunch of tiny blisters on my outer labia, and inside my vagina as well. It became more and more painful. The next day I went to the Dr. for some swabs. He told me he thought it was herpes but I thought - how?! - we have been together for 7 years, 100% faithful, and have only ever been with 1 person prior (my last relationship ended 8 years ago, and his ended 13 years ago).

My swab turned up positive for HSV1 - but I have never had a cold sore, and neither has my fiance. I'm just confused and don't understand how I can have this. Is it possible HSV1 could be dormant in either of us all this time? It just seems bizarre I had this happen so quickly after sex, esp when neither of us have ever had any symptoms of HSV.

The sores are SO SO SO painful now, I can't even walk or sit, really hurts to pee, and nothing seems to help. I hope now they have broken it won't take long to heal, but I am not familiar with HSV.

Does anyone have any insight, or maybe even some relief options for my pain?

This is a very common presentation of a first infection with genital HSV1. I'm sorry to hear that you are having a painful first time of it. The outlook you might find positive though. Half of people with genital HSV1 never get another outbreak beyond 6 months. For those that do experience outbreaks, the average is every couple of years.

The cause is also often easy to explain. Your partner has an oral HSV1 infection, most probably from his youth. He just never experiences cold sores; up to half of those with the virus do not.

You were almost certainly infected through oral sex 2-10 days before the outbreak. Does this fit?

Sometimes yeast can mimic a herpes outbreak.

If there is widespread herpes sores then yes discharge and the related symptoms you describe may feature. New clusters appearing for a few days of a primary outbreak are also quite common.

thank you again. I was wondering if you may know of this?

Everything is so swollen and tender down there, I cannot see inside my vagina at all but I know it is red and inflamed (I pushed down HARD with my kegels to  take a peek - sooo painful!). Is it usual to have discharge? the folds of my inner labia are coated in this white stuff (looks likeyeast infection??).

I'm on Famvir (starting my 4th day of 10) but have not seen any results yet. In fact, tonight I noticed a new cluster of water blisters - fantastic, more pain to deal with :-(

Hang in there, it won't last much longer. People say taking a hot bath with salts and drying off with a hairdryer for a few days will get you there.

Actually many couples in your situation never actually transmit the virus in a lifetime of sex. The fact that it took 7 years is not unusual in the slightest.

You are describing a primary infection. Oral sex 2-10 days before the sores is when you were infected. It was probably from a day or two before the sexual episode after which you felt tender.

I have little doubt your partner carries the HSV1 virus, more than half the population do.

:-( thank you for the explanation. It just seems strange that now of all the years I experience this.

Is it possible that I was a carrier and just had an outbreak from sex? or more likely that he was a carrier and gave it to me? in the end it doesn't matter, it may always be a mystery as to how I got it.

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I have been bedridden for 3 days experiencing the worst pain of my life.I hope it doesn't last much longer.
