What's the risk?

I recently received an erotic massage. It was only a handjob but the therapist stripped down and straddled me, rubbing her vagina on my scrotum to visually simulate sex.  She had her hand around my penis the whole time and so it never came in contact anything else.

Can herpes pass from vagina to scrotum? How likely is this type of transmission? She wasn't showing any symptoms but I've read about shedding so I'm concerned.

If it is truly a first infection, then the symptom would likely be genital.  If it is a first RECOGNIZED infection, then it could be anywhere in the genital area.

The risk of acquiring any STD from this encounter is very low.  You might want to check for lice, but other than that, I'm not worried.

Well, your situation was not risk free.  I think it is low risk, but there was some risk because there was skin to skin contact and likely vaginal secretions rubbed up against your skin as well.  Clearly, the manual stimulation was not a risk.

I can't give you the risks of transmission specifically with this contact, but since this was a paid sex worker, I think you might want to consider getting a baseline herpes antibody test and then repeating it in 3-4 months, just to be certain.

Again, I think your risk was low, but not risk free.

Is there more you would like to ask me about this?

Thanks Terri. I've had the baseline test and am awaiting the results. I do have two follow-up questions:

1) if I have an initial outbreak, will it be in the area of exposure or could it be anywhere in the genital region?

2) Besides HSV-2 and genital warts, what other STDs should I test for after the contact i described?
