When are cold sores contagious?

I've had a cold sore of some kind for the last 6 months. There will be a couple of days when I'm okay, but then another crops up. I know that chronic cases are rare, and I've accepted that I'm one of those few that have to deal with this on a daily basis. My concern is that I have a boyfriend of almost five years and I hate not being able to kiss him. It's almost tragic. I need to know when it's okay to kiss him. Do I wait until the scar tissue is gone? Is it only contagious when the sores weep? I need help!

Yeah, I know (in regards to the durations of my breakout)...it's actually started to affect my mental and sexual health. I feel like I can't do anything without putting my partner at risk. So I try to avoid doing as much as possible because this disease is just SO horrible. I'm sure these are true cold sores, I contracted HSV a couple of years ago from a slight peck on the corner of my mouth. Since then I've had one really bad outbreak each year, but this year it's been continuous for about 6 months - up to this point. I'm distress to say the least. I'm going to see a doctor about it tomorrow, just so he can take a good look at my situation and prescribe me some medication/treatment/etc.

Your sores should be completely healed over before you kiss anybody. That's a long time to have a cold sore. Are you sure that's what it is? Ever had them cultured? Since you seem to have so many, it might be easy for you to get to a doctor's office when you have them and get it checked.
