This isn't likely to result in hsv2. Even though those shorts are pretty little ( and trust me I like that about them....he he he ), it's still covering the areas that the virus sheds from. If you did by chance contract herpes in the manner you described, you'd get lesions where the point of contact was - so say if you had a bare torso rubbing around someone's inner thigh where they had an active lesion, you'd have the hsv on the torso area.
You'd be more at risk from hsv1 orally being transmitted to your body from contact than hsv2.
herpes gladiatorum is always due to herpes simplex . I believe your instructor is either misinformed or just uncomfortable talking about herpes.

i do alot of MMA and we wear only beach shorts that can ride really high and at times we are in weird positions with our arms, legs, neck and even faces in contact with the high inner thigh close to the crotch area. and somtimes wven though we have mouthgauard can get scrapped or cut from others teeth can HSV 2 pass those ways? if so would it show in the boxer short area or at the point of infection (arm, leg, etc?). our instructor said the gladitorium is not the same as herpes 1&2??
unless you are participating in naked sports, I wouldn't worry about it.

I have HSV2, but have never had a known outbreak.
gladitorium can be either type but typically it is hsv1 because the facial area isn't covered like the boxer short area is during contact sports.
Do you have hsv2 genitally and are asking or are you wondering if you should be concerned from others in the sports you participate in?
