cold sore self-inoculation

DOC,

I get very infrequent cold sores.  Each time one of them pops up on my lip, I become very paranoid of self-inoculation.  When I first developed a cold sore, I heard horror stories of gentlemen who touched the sore, used the bathroom and infected their genitals.  My questions are;
1.  How common is self-inoculation?
2. What can I do to prevent it?
3. What treatment would you recommend at the onset of a cold sore?

Thanks very much for all that you do.

You will not give yourself genital herpes from your cold sores. You have significant protection from doing so.

your cold sores are infrequent so your best bet is to have a filled prescription of the herpes antivirals in the cold sores doses to start at the very first sign of a recurrence. You can sometimes head off a full blown cold sore if you start the medication soon enough. For famvir and valtrex, the cold sore doses are just 1 day treatments. see their websites for more info.
