How easy to get HSV 1 orally?

So I like this girl, alot.

apparently she has HSV 1 on her mouth. she has only had 1 outbreak and went to a doctor and got medicine and whatnot (probably valtrex).

I was just wondering how easy would it be to get it from her with no signs at all present? She's had it for like half a year or so probably.

Please get back to me, I don't know what to do. We both like each other, but I think this may be the end of things.. Even though i don't really want it to be.

Scary? For the vast majority of herpes sufferers, it is nothing more than a nuisance skin condition. Clearly people need to be more well-read and educated, not encouraged to be fearful. Approximately 70% of the adult population have oral herpes, and it's safe to say that I know not a one who has had a serious illness or death from it. Yes, there is ocular herpes - which can be very serious -  but again that is a very small percentage of people who have herpes.

Become informed and educated about herpes. Read the ASHA site here: http://www.ashastd.org/HERPES/HERPES_LEARN.CFM  Read the herpes handbook here: http://www.westoverheights.com/genital_herpes/handbook/view_the_chapters.html

You should get tested to find out your current status. If anything else crops up on your lip or mouth, please go within 48 hours to a clinic and have it swabbed and cultured. It will put your mind to rest to know one way or the other whether you've had it all along, whether you've recently acquired it or whether you are still susceptible to it.

As others have said here, if you do have HSV-1, welcome to 60-80% of the population.

If your girl is taking meds and doesn't have outbreaks and you don't have sexual contact (ie no fellatio or kissing when she's having an oral outbreak) your odds of getting it from her are very very very low.

You said you don't want it to end, so don't end it. Just get informed, protect yourself and enjoy being with someone you like. It helps to have that when everyone else is being so crappy.

The rumor mongers are just ignorant. The very same people who are being crappy to you and/or her are just as likely to get oral herpes as 60-80% of the rest of the population, or may already have it. Think about how many of them might have/will get genital herpes as well... they just have no idea.  That's nothing to hold against them, but just to keep in mind yourself and help you and your girl not take anything they say about this personally or even seriously.

yah it is difficult to figure out...but seriously hsv 1 isn't that big of a deal after all like petal said 70% of the population has it...bjune do u have it orally or genitally or both? were u wearing a condom while having sex with her? I was recently devistated to know I had it but after doing research and going onto this website I have been a lot more relieved knowing I am not the only one in this world! but bjune I guess it depends on the person too

During college I had a one week intense affair with a girl on campus. She had the biggest coldsore on her lip ever. I didn't know what coldsores were back then an assumed it was a pimple or something. I kissed her repeatedly and received vast quantities of unprotected oral sex from her. Never caught anything from her. 20 years later I start a relationship with a girl who never gets coldsores yet warned me that she was HSV 1 positive. I end up having primary infection symptoms that felt like I was dying. This virus is tough to figure. I have a buddy that REFUSES to acknowledge that coldsores are caused by herpes. He rubs his eyes, ***** cuts on his hands and never spreads it. I know a girls who had it for a few years and washed her hands constantly and is paranoid of spreading it and she ends up infecting one of her eyes. Can't figure this virus out and that's what makes it so scary.

I recently got HSV 1 like a month ago genitally from a guy I was dating who has cold sore virus  that he's had as a child...at the time I didn't know he got cold sores :( but anyways so many ppl get cold sores and there is nothing I can do about it now..if u aren't going to get it from this girl u will eventually contract it from someone else in the future without them knowing...so don't let it ruin what u can have with her

I have been told that "canker sores" and "cold sores" are two different things.  Canker sores are inside you mouth and the cause is unknown.  Some experts say there is a hereditary link, but are in most literature said to not be contagious.

"Cold sores" or "Fever Blisters" would be oral HSV1.

ya i remember having canker sores as a youngin...

i've had some things like in the creases on my lips (like the sides if that makes sense) that were kinda like sores or maybe a sunburn a while back.

i have a pimple on my right below bottom lip and i popped it, and kinda have been picking at it and now i think it might kinda sunburnt as well! can't wait for it to go away.

Well if you had "canker sores" or "cold sores" - both refer to oral herpes, depending on peoples own description - then yes, you could have it. Once again, upwards of 70% of the adult population have it, so truly, stop fretting. If you want to know your true herpes status, you would need to get an IgG type specific blood test.

is there any way i could figure out if i had it previously ?

Obviously there is the risk that you could get it, but you may already have it and by that I mean, you could have had it before you even met this girl.  Alot of people are exposed to it as children and dont have symptoms and therefore dont know that they have it.
Kids and most adults can be so cruel.  Education and compassion could go along way.

like isn't it basically inevitable i would get it if we continued talking..

just by kissing frequently i bet i'd get it eventually, even with her being on meds and not having sores and using condoms for everything.

no she hasn't had an outbreak since i've known her...

she had one right after she got it and it hasn't reoccurred since.

kids can be cruel. oral herpes is really common, like 80%. Its unfortunate for her the lesions are appearing in her adolecence and so openly. Either stand up or step down, your choice bro.

Hopefully a vaccine will be out to protect the public soon from the stigma.

at least shes on medicine and whatnot. how do guys deal with having it like when finding new partners and whatnot?

Did you know that roughly 60 - 80% of the adult population has oral herpes? If you plan on ending the relationship based on that, you'll clearly miss out on many a relationship. Clearly you need to read and become educated about herpes, and know that it's only a pesky skin condition.
