Immunoblot Test result

Hi Medhelp forum,

I received my Immunoblot type specific IGG test result: it said herpes type specific antibodies were not determined. I took the bloodtest over 12 weeks after possible infection. Why would the immunoblot still be uncertain? Can you please provide some clarity on this result?

I also had a IgM test done at the same 12+ week point and it was positive at 2.63.

Thank you for your time.

usually they report the immunoblot with positive or negative, not the "not determined" wording which is why I'd just repeat it once more and be sure.

Thank you, Grace.

Does "type specific herpes antibodies were not determined" mean that there are definitely antibodies but just that they don't know which type? Or is it the case that the test couldn't identify any antibodies?

Also, I haven't shown any symptoms since the possible exposure - only chapped lips and soreness/pain in my neck muscles. I had a boil in my groin region close to the base of my scrotum that was cultured the very day in noticed it: the herpes culture was negative and the bacterial culture was positive for a form of staph. Does that change your interpretation of the results?\

thanks so much.

igm herpes testing is not accurate. current cdc recommendations are that it not be drawn on adults for the purpose of diagnosing herpes. a positive igm for herpes is pretty much meaningless :(

at this point, I'd wait another month and repeat your herpes igg blood testing elsewhere and go from there.  Usually not a lot of sense in repeating the exact same test.   typically the immunoblot is used in labs that don't get a lot of requests for herpes blood testing.

Would anyone with knowledge of Immunoblot or general igg testing please weigh in? I would appreaciate any answers from Grace or Dr. HHH. Please.
