hsv-2 or not??

Hey Community,

I was tested for hsv2 for yearly annual in march. Everything came back negative except my hsv2 results. positive at 2.5 igg.(Quest-Herpeselect) I panicked. never had an outbreak or any signs. had hsv1 since my childhood. After speaking to my Nurse Practitioner about my results, she was dead set on the fact that i had it. She said a positive is a positive. After being in a slump for about 3 months i did some reseach about hsv2 and i found out some very disturbing info about this particular test (herpeselect-Quest). i read it has many false positives in the low positive range and if its under 3.5 it must be confirmed by a western blot. My 2.5 igg is considered a "presumptive"  or "early " infection. My last sexaul encounter before being tested was 1 year ago. I then went to see an infectious disease doctor and explained to him my situation, and he told me hsv2 testing is not recommeded without any symptoms becasue they are known for false postive. He also said a hsv1 infection can trigger a false positive  for hs2 and also the cold virus can trigger a false positive. And coincidently at the time i tested i had a cold and on top of that i'm hsv1 positive!! He advised me to take a western blot, in which i did and got the results today and they were postive for hsv1 and negative for hsv2!! Im so relieved i dont have the hsv2!!!!!!!  Am i really free of hsv2 ?? i know its redundant to ask after a negative western blot, which is conclusive..Im just so shocked and happy it came back negative.i just need reasurrance from others that been through this and experts on this forum.

Thank You
Kristy Pat

Unless you are sleeping with someone new within 4-6 months of the Western Blot, you are about 99.9% likely to be HSV2 free.

And you're very well-informed.  The IgG tests are great for early detection... but too sensitive and problematic due to the high percentage of false positives.  Glad you did the additional digging.

You must have been very relieved when you got the news.

Congrats.
