Question for Terri and Others - Hsv2 oral transmission
Male here. Had unprotected oral sex with a female 3/2/14. Lesion formed on lip 3/12/14. Had all looks of a herpectic lesion. Mother recalls me having cold sores as a kid. There were no lesions present anywhere on the female I performed on. Just to be safe, I went to a local lab with a good reputation on 3/14/14. They recommended, based on the situation, and that the contact had occurred less than 2 weeks prior, that I do a quest diagnostics igm selective blood test. I questioned the igg test, and was told that based on the acute nature and fact that I currently am symptomatic, the igm would be more reliable than if more time had lapsed. Hindsight is 20/20 should have had it swabbed. Unfortunately, it has already scabbed over and is fading. What are my odds here that I have contracted an hsv 2 infection orally?
you can follow up with a hsv2 igg in 3 months for peace of mind. no need to test for hsv1 since you already know you have it.
It was a random one night stand sort of situation. Honestly wouldn't know how to get ahold of her. I haven't had a cold sore in years, many years, which is why I am concerned.
herpes igm testing isn't very accurate. it's not worth wasting money on due to the high false positive issues with it.

so what do you do now? well oral hsv2 occurs infrequently. in folks who do contract it, it rarely sheds and rarely reoccurs. it's not a big deal in general. odds really are this was your hsv1 oral infection or something non-herpes related and because of the recent encounter, you are just paying more attention than usual to it.
have you talked to the female in question to see if she will test for herpes and provide you with a copy of igg blood test results to see if you were even at risk?

Test at 3 months for hsv2 but you can test now for hsv1 and your breakout oral, if its herpes mostly is hsv1 from childhood.
Seems like too much of a coincidence that I have a breakout 10 days after this encounter though, no? I don't believe in coincidence. What is the earliest after exposure I can have an igg?

Hi, igg test only. Too late for a swab but if you have hsv1 oral, getting hsv2 oral pretty slim possibility close to zero.
